I was posting what Olney tweeted.

(How funny is that, Olney tweeting ... )

That's what I figured, but I wonder if they just DFA him or trade him or whatever.

Then tell me why (because I'm a baseball idiot) the Sox would be trying to dump LaRoche? If Martinez was going to be the catcher, why does the 1B become dispensible?

    Same here.

It's not easy to trade for a possible future No. 1 like Buchholz, especially when teams are unwilling to give up top prospects. There's no way Cleveland could afford a guy like this on the open market.

Mid-season? I doubt it. I think Martinez plays a lot of 1st with Lowell resting.

I meant gone at the end of the year.

Because Martinez will end up playing a lot at first base as well as catcher. I don't think Varitek would be gone if they do this. His role would just be greatly reduced.

Sox may not be done, either. Rumors are still rumbling that the Sox are still trying to get Adrian Gonzalez.

The Padres asking price is insane, though.

What is it? Prices seem down, other than Halladay.

Since 2006, when he started making starts at 1st base, Martinez has ...

    96 starts, 810 chances, 5 errors.

In the 2007 playoffs, he went 14 for 44 against the Sox and Yanks, with 6 runs, 2 doubles, 2 homers and 7 RBI.

Just a solid vet to pick up for the playoff run.

Jon Heyman from SI was reporting that the Padres had Buccholz, Lowrie and Masteron "in the mix," but were not excluding Lars Anderson or Ryan Westmoreland.
