Mauer does have some incrediblke numbers, .388 BA, .451 OBP, .544 SLG, .995 OPS

The problem, however, is 5 HR, 30 RBI, 33 runs scored = 58 runs produced (Runs + RBI- HR)

By contrast, Jose Reyes, .249 BA, .311 OBP, .411 SLG, .722 OPS
    but ... 6 HR, 30 RBI, 46 runs = 70 runs produced.

So who has done more to help his team win?

Well, I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to the Twins this year, but I'm guessing Reyes has a little more help from the rest of the lineup. Not a whole lot Mauer can do about folks not driving him in, or about there not being guys on to drive in.

I'll take my chances with the guy hitting .388 any day of the week, runs and RBIs be damned.

fascinating.  ::) another one of those inane stats that makes him a record-holder of a record no one's ever heard of.

seriously though, mauer hits like ted williams. his plate discipline is phenomenal. i've never seen anyone so good at laying off anything out of the strike zone - especially a 23-year-old. he could develop into a career .350 hitter.

unfortunately, he needs to pick up his teammates more. hitting .388 is great, but at this pace he'll get about 70 RBIs. you need more than that from your best hitter. obviously he'll never be a 40 home run hitter but he needs to develop more power. if nothing else, he should be averaging 90-100 RBIs a year. and this is the reason he's not more noticed outside of minnesota.

Right, mustard, because you win games based on higher batting average rather than scoring more runs that the other guy.
I have no problem taking a guy who's hitting .388 but to say "runs and RBI de damned" is the equivalent of saying "winning be damned."

So, Mauer can hit 1.000, but if there's nobody on base to drive in, then he's useless. Or he could get on base every time he comes to the plate, but if nobody drives him home, better to have Jose Reyes.

    Ridiculous, man. Ridiculous.

Edit: And Mauer's been terrible on the rare occasions he's come to the plate with runners in scoring position. He's only hitting .333 (23rd among hitters with 50ABs w/RISP.)

So, I guess because Mauer's teammates are shit, you'd rather have Jose Reyes on your team. If Mauer was playing for the Mets, we'd have already given him the NLMVP.

  6. Mauer's injury history also makes Nick Johnson look like Cal Ripken. In two years Mauer probably will be moved to another position ala Craig Biggio because of his knees.

Also Ramon Hernandez has more win shares than Mauer so far this season among AL catchers (13 to 11 - Varitek just has 4). I would argue that the weakest part of win shares is in how it measures a catchers contribution to a teams success. (Win share through 6/6/06)

That said - Mauer is probably the best young catcher in baseball just edging Victor Martnez because Mauer is 6-years younger.

    RC27, from ESPN.com's stats:

Joe Mauer, 6th in the majors at 9.58
Jose Reyes, 116th in the majors at 4.84

    What the hell is RC27?

  9. RC27 is the new hot rap group out of NYC

No offense, Zeke, but 6 is not a bunch of stolen bases.

Well, that explains it. I donlt listen to rap.

And ChrisLou, Mauer's kind of low production numbers are the same things you have villified Boggs for.

It's how many runs a lineup consisting of only that player would produce in a game (Runs created/27 outs).

    RC = [(H + BB + HBP - CS - GIDP) times (Total bases + .26[BB - IBB + HBP] + .52[SH + SF + SB])] divided by (AB + BB + HBP + SH+ SF)
