    Silly argument.

    It's not his fault the Cardinals bullpen blows goats.

    And to say he can't be the MVP because of how bad the Pirates suck is even more silly.

    In the other, more important, league, Morneau doubles home Denard Span in the bottom of the first for his 120th RBI of the season and a 1-0 Twins lead.

    I want to go uber-fanboi on this one. I am resisting.

    "I see it this way: Someone who doesn't take his team to the playoffs doesn't deserve to win the MVP."
    --- Albert Pujols, after Ryan Howard beat him out in 2006.

    They have six games left with Boston. I'm not saying it's likely, but I didn't think what the Rockies did last year was either.

    Albert's a whiny juiced up bitch but if Andre Dawson can win it on the dogass team he played on in 87 Pujols can win it this year.

    Of course Dawson wasn't a steroid-fueled freak when he hit 49 homers that year.

    You may be right Zeke, but so is Pujols.

    Consider this for VALUE:

    Through June 17 (70 games) .... Delgado = 9 HR, 32 RBI, .238 BA.
    Mets = 34-36, 3rd place, 6 1/2 out.

    Since then: (75 games) Delgado 26 HR, 72 RBI, .288 BA
    Mets = 48-27, 1st place + 3 1/2

    Which NL player would be the MVP of the most NL teams. Probably Pujols.

    I like Delgado because of how big his homers have been, and how he has not allowed the Mets to spit the bit against Philly.

    Pujols got royally screwed that year.

    Howard didn't do shit the last month as the Phillies faded.

    You guys have to make up your mind.... does performing in crunch time matter more, or not?

    Yes, you can make an argument that Carlos Lee would have been the Astros' MVP over Lance Berkman when he went on the DL about a month ago. The only category other than steals where he had a real advantage was batting average (.334-.314). But the season didn't end on Aug. 9 (the day Lee was hurt)

    As of Aug 9, Pujols was batting .350 with 23 home runs and 73 RBI. On that same date, Ryan Ludwick was batting .307 with 28 homers and 82 RBI. Who was the Cardinals' MVP at that point? I would have gone with Pujols just because he puts a heck of a lot more fear in opposing pitchers, but on pure production you could have made an argument for Ludwick.

    The gap has gotten a lot larger between the two over the past month, because Pujols has been dominant and Ludwick has slowed considerably in that time, but we can't compare Berkman's statistics with Lee's over the past month so that is a bit unfair. Who knows if Lee would have kept up his pace? He's a heck of a player, but the pace he was on when he got hurt was definitely above his usual leve.

    The Cardinals' lineup isn't that bad. They are fourth in the National League in runs scored and it isn't all Pujols. Ludwick should probably land somewhere in the top 10 in NL MVP voting.

    Berkman's Astros, by comparison, are only ninth in the NL in runs scored and he has been without Lee's help for over a month now.

    I'm not saying Pujols isn't the MVP. If I had to vote today, he'd get my vote, too. But I don't think the argument that Berkman wasn't even the Astros' MVP a month ago holds up very well.
