Mark Loretta ends 16 innings of hitless frustration. Nice job, Astros. Way to show up.

This isn't the first time Lilly has dominated the Astros. He threw 8 innings of 1-run ball before Bob Howry gave away the game the day after the ASB ... Piniella shifted the rotation largely because Lilly has shut down Houston and the Brewers have a RH-dominant lineup, so he saved three righties for that series (plus it puts Lilly in line to start against STL, which is notoriously worse against lefties than righties).

I guess I forgot that Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer and Joe Nathan and Carlos Pena and James Shields and Hanley Ramirez have been traded for nothing. Or that of the four biggest deals ever awarded to a closer, three were given out by small-market teams (Jays/Ryan, Reds/Cordero, Twins/Nathan).

For crying out loud dude, teams that are trying are retaining their guys...except the handful of starting pitchers who insist on busting the market. And why SHOULD anyone give a six-year, $140 million deal to a pitcher? Let's see how that Santana deal has worked out for the Twins and Mets come 2013, OK? It's working out great so far for the Giants and Zito. And it worked out great for the Rockies and Hampton.

Anyone continuing to argue that baseball is unfair to the so-called small markets is simply ignoring the facts and trends in favor of beating his tired argument into the ground.

I am NOT continuing this on this thread beyond here, b/c you damn well know this isn't going to just stay between us two reasonably intelligent people and I am NOT replying to certain people who seem to enjoy bringing this topic up when it hasn't even been mentioned and are unable to leave well enough alone even though the powers that be have explicitly said DO NOT REPLY TO CERTAIN PEOPLE.

So if you want to have the last word (at least til I show back up in October), knock yourself out. You'll have to rush to the keyboard to get it, though, cause someone's racing to beat you.

Sox get 4 off Kazmir in the first, and Dice-K wriggles out of the bottom half.

And suddenly Kazmir hits Varitek in the second on the arm, the warning comes out. Pretty ridiculous that it came out already...it was just an inside pitch that missed.

Like he'd hit a .225 hitter on purpose.

Given his control issues, it might be difficult for him to hit someone on purpose.

And seeing how Kazmir's had no control all night, it's a real reach to say it was intentional.

If he'd been aiming for Varitek, he'd probably hit Raymond if he was dancing on top of the Rays' dugout.

Varitek found a boogie. He's just helping out his friend.
