The Pirates get credit for being aggressive with one draft pick -- Alvarez. This year, they reached for a guy who should have been taken at least 20 spots later so they could spend on picks later in the draft. Maybe that was only because there wasn't a truly elite prospect available. Or maybe ownership won't let the front office spend like that again on a draft pick.

The Nats offered Crow 1.4 million above slot last year and he turned it down. You can say a lot about the Nats but you can't put that one on them. To say they're not aggressive is complete horsecrap. Is 14-16 mil for Strasburg not aggressive?

Yeah, if he turns that down. Wow.

The top three picks are Boras clients. Big fucking surprise.

Strasborg is either getting bad advice or just doesn't want to play for the Nationals.

You should be thanking the White Sox for that loss.

Or maybe it's because the Pirates' front office -- right or wrong -- didn't deem anyone worthy of a $6 million-plus bonus this year. After Strasburg and Dustin Ackley, this draft was a crapshoot full of the biggest crapshoot of all, high school arms.

So instead of taking a prep pitcher early and having the possibility of that first-rounder flame out, the Pirates took four high-ceiling, hard-to-sign guys in later rounds. It makes sense, is a much better investment of the team's resources and is a pretty darn aggressive (and bold) strategy when you think about it.

If Pittsburgh "earns" the top pick for 2010, I guarantee they'll draft and sign either Strasburg or Harper.

Also, while it's early, Sanchez is proving his worth so far:

The biggest issue with Strasbourg may be term, not money. The Nationals may be trying to lock him up for six years -- so they can avoid arbitration, which owners despise.

Boras will take the chance the Strasbourg can make more signing for two or three years.

As the owner of the Nats farm system in the SportsJournalists.com keeper league, they damn well better sign Strasburg.

I liked what the Pirates did. They're building their farm system like the Sox did.... Low risk high picks and high-risk, high-reward HS guys later. Now that they're spending money in Latin America, it shouldn't be too terribly long before they turn out a decent team.

i can't argue with their logic. if they spend about $6 million on the entire team giving a draft pick that much is ridiculous.

This is still the organization that invited two Indian dudes to camp, practically sight unseen.
