And he's never been the same since Dusty ran him out to pitch in an extra-inning game two days after his previous start last season.

    Cueto's pitch counts:

    April 11 109
    April 17 88
    April 22 108
    April 27 98
    May 3 109
    May 8 98
    May 13 100
    May 19 112
    May 24 111
    May 29 104
    June 3 101
    June 9 111
    June 14 110
    June 20 82
    June 25 95
    July 1 108
    July 6 49
    July 11 101
    July 19 108
    July 25 105
    July 30 96
    August 4 103
    August 10 39
    August 15 60

He lasted less than three innings in the last two appearances and in the 49-pitch game he only made it through 2/3 of an inning.

Only one start went longer than seven innings but he hasn't pitched into the 7th since June 9. That's a shitload of pitches for the number of innings thrown.

Young pitchers blew their arms out when I was a kid. They blow their arms out today when they're watched over like a souffle in a three-star restaurant. They blow their arms out in high school and college, too.
Pitching is bad for your arm, period. Kids aren't used to being pushed today, and Dusty pushes 'em, which doesn't help, but to blame him for the injuries is mistaking a symptom for a cause.

Judging on the series I just watched, how long does Nick Masset have?

Everything except the last clause is right on the money. (Dusty's established a long, long pattern of wearing out pitchers. He does deserve some blame for his guys.)

No amount of babying or development or injury prevention can make an unnatural motion become natural.

Only difference now is that there's a lot more money invested in these kids. But money < physics.

That averages out to 153 pitches for a nine inning game.

Which doesn't mean much, because he isn't throwing those 153 pitches all in one day.

Per inning, it sucks. Not denying that at all. Means his pitch efficiency is quite mediocre.

But as OOP said, he's not throwing 153 pitches. Big difference.

Yeah, sorry. That's like saying a team struggles at the plate because it averages 27 outs per 9 innings. It's just not relevant.

Get there early to ensure you actually get to see him. (Of course it IS the Paders, so he might go nine hitless)

Against SD, that's like a Triple A assignment.
