sounds good, overrated. and although i think you're totally overrated ( ;D ;)) i won't insult you since this is an insult-free thread.

but seriously, i know what you mean about stats and baseball. growing up i was considered a nerdy stats head baseball fan among my friends, but in the last 10 years with the popularity of sabermetrics my interest in and knowledge of stats is nothing compared with most people.

Royals trade Elmer Dessens to the Dodgers for Odalis Perez and two prospects.

Perez hasn't been very good since he signed that deal with the Dodgers, but he's 10 times better than anyone else the Royals have.

Edit: Forgot the obvious connection between ex-Brave Perez and ex-Brave exec Dayton Moore. Good, low-risk move for the next year-and-a-half.

Not really. Last I checked, Mark Redman struck out seven and allowed only one run through eight innings at Fenway. I'm pretty sure he's having a better season than Perez (6.83 ERA in the weak NL).

Point taken, though. I like what the Royals are doing, trading pieces for prospects. If you're not going to win with that you have now -- which we knew in March -- you might as well target players and prospects you think can benefit the organization and stock the farm system, which desperately needs it.

So where is Alfonso Soriano as of 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon? And why has this story been so mishandled?

Arrr... t' story be mishandled because Jim Bowden be a gobsmacked moron. He be dumber than a belaying pin.

Arrr... with $20 Pete out of action - Bowden be lost on how to leak a tale of trade intrigue. Dead men may tell no tales but live morons tell lots of 'em. First it be Gangway McCarthy headin' to t' capital. Now its Corsair Podsednik. Bowden be chumming the fish with his tales.

A poxy scurvy dog is Bowden. Will ye be surprised if Sporiano not be shark bait but remain at t' same anchorage as today?

Don't let a few good games fool you. When a guy like that, with no margin for error, is walking as many as he's striking out, he's not going to be very good for very long.

Perez had some great WHIPs with the Dodgers. I'd chalk his terrible year up to uncertainty and unhappiness over his role. At best, he can be the staff ace for the next year-and-a-half and placeholder for these younger pitchers. And if he's really washed up, well, at least they got two prospects to go along with him.

There's no chance Elmer Dessens is two prospects better than Odalis.

Because everyone is so desperate for the scoop, they're going to take info from teams or people that have other motives, simply to claim that they MIGHT have have the story. Or when it doesn't happen, they can claim that when the leak got out, their report inspired someone else to step up their bid in order to acquire Soriano. Either way, they can claim to have had it with nothing to back it up.

And BYH, Redman's not that bad. I know what you mean about Perez, who's flashed the talent. But he's not "10 times better" than Redman, at least this season.

Me thinks someone needs to take off his Redman All-Star jersey.  :D

Recent performance notwithstanding, I'll still take Perez, three years younger and with much better stuff, over Redman.

And I don't even like Redman. Seriously. Perez has had no consistency, and yes, I would take him -- and the two prospects, which should help restock a farm system that definitely needs it.
