I was just watching highlights from today. Verlander had the 98 mph fastball going, but from the highlights it looked like he was pitching off the secondary pitches. They showed Casey Blake take a called third strike on a nasty, nasty curveball--he flinched, realized the ball wasn't going to hit him in the noggin and was about to drop in over the plate, dropped his head and turned in one motion, and walked to the dugout like a man who had just been shit on by a bird.

He has a knuckle curve-type pitch, where he puts one knuckle on the ball and throws like a curveball. Very tough pitch to hit. He also has a regular curve as well.

For awhile, he wasn't throwing the knuckle curve as much because of a blister problem. But I think that's taken care of now.

    Deal.
I think Verlander faces much stiffer competition. I watched his game yesteday, kid is damn good.
Ziimmerman, well, my feelings are clear there.

People keep saying the Twins are a bat short or need another pitcher yet they're something like 34-6 in their last 40 games. Looks like they've got everything they need to me.

and if they miss the playoffs, it'll be on whoever convinced terry ryan that ruben sierra, tony batista and juan castro had any life in them. the slow start may end up being what killed them.

also, as a twins fan and natural pessimist, i'm waiting for liriano to hit the proverbial rookie wall. despite silva's game yesterday, this is a three-man staff, which is great for the postseason or a crucial showdown with the tigers this weekend, but not so much for the dog days.

I miss one day and something crazy goes on with the one thread I care about. What is happening and, to paraphrase Idaho, why is everybody being so moronic on this thread?

    They're on a run of 1984 Tigers 35-5 proportion.

After those Tigers started 35-5, they went 69-53 the rest of the way (.565). The Twins may have to better that mark to make the playoffs this year tho.

Should be a great series this weekend tho. And to think, the Tigers outscored the Twins 33-1 over a three game series in the middle of May. Somehow I don't think it will be like that this weekend.

funny, the first thing I thought of last night was this is an '84 Tigers run.

And I remember that spanking the Tigers gave them. I know Radke and Silva pitched in that series, not sure who the third sucko was (had to be Lohse). I never in a million years would have believed a team that could get beaten that bad that many days in a row could have a run like this.

Oops, my mistake. It was the end of April.

Tigers won 18-1 on April 29. Liriano didn't start, but he went three innings, gave up five runs on eight hits with five Ks.

The next series, Liriano came on in relief on May 6. Gave up two runs on three hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Of course, none of that means a thing now.

BYH, I think the third was Santana. Tigers beat him earlier this year on a two-run homer by Vance Wilson. Verlander got the win. I think that was in the end of April series.

    Game 1: Detroit 9, Minnesota 0. W-Robertson. L-Radke.
    Game 2: Detroit 18, Minnesota 1. W-Verlander. L-Silva.
    Game 3: Detroit 6, Minnesota 0. W-Rogers. L-Lohse.

Minnesota is definitely going to have to add someone to maintain the rest of the season, but I don't think Detroit is a total lock. At some point Magglio and Guillen will have to hit the DL for 15 days and Kenny Rogers is starting his normal second half plunge. It will be interesting to see how Verlander does down the stretch.

He's gotten better over his last seven starts.

I understand your point, but if I'm the Tigers, I'd be far more worried about Rogers' annual el foldo, Miner and Robertson than Verlander, who might win the Cy Young without winning ROY (hi Oz!).
