It really happened. I was too young to remember it, but I have seen the replay many times. It was one of those Reggie swings in which he strode so far that he was almost kneeling when he hit it. Just golfed the thing, but with all the tork of his lower body uncoiling on it. It's hard to know how far it would have gone. I'd say 625 is a reach--can someone hit a baseball that far?--but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the farthest a ball has ever been hit. The picture that shos the trajectory of the ball that Mickey Mantle hit off the facade at Yankee Stadium makes a case for that one, too.

Carlos Guillen just became the 10th Tiger in history to hit for the cycle. He also stole a base.

    - Can Hernandez close?

    - Any of the teams who passed on pitching yesterday kicking themselves over Lopez's gem (2hr. 20 min.)

How about the rookie Brent Clevlen hitting his first two ML home runs tonight, both to dead center field.

The Royals needed to trade their spare parts. So they targeted young players with upside, then decided to go out and get them. Ryan Shealy and the pitching prospects are great examples.

Too bad the Pirates failed to do the same.

He crushed those. The first one was a pitch at his shins. Didn't get a good look at the second.

So has he added to the left field logjam? They can't send him down right now. Five guys (DY, Monroe, Thames, Clevlen, Casey) for three spots (LF, 1B, DH). I know there will be a lot of rotating, but who are odd-man out on a normal basis?

Casey will play mostly 1B I'd think. DY will DH a ton, occassionally play first.

Clevlen can play any of the three OF spots, but that's still a logjam to have with Monroe and Thames. It's a good problem to have tho.

How about Verlander becoming the first in the majors to 14 wins?

If he wins 18-20 games to help the Tigers take first and finishes with the league lead in ERA should he win the Cy Young, even if Liriano wins ROY?

I wouldn't say Liriano's a lock for rookie of the year anymore.

Could one win one and one the other, though?

No. Liriano only went into the rotation in early May, yet he's fifth in the AL in strikeouts -- and only four from moving into second place. Sub-2.00 ERA leads the league, he could rank second in strikeouts to his teammate despite everyone else getting a head start ... Liriano's dominance wins out.

Does anyone think Ricky Henderson could help a team down the stretch or is he now in full countdown mode until his five-year wait for first-ballot Hall of Fame selection occurs?
