Maybe that's what smasher did, too.

And who's the real Barry Zito? The one that occasionally has a ratio of .75, or the one who has one of 2.0 about half the time? :-\

For those who covered the game 20-25 years ago:

How comparable is the current A-Rod to that of the Dave Winfield days? I realize, except for the 81 season, the 80s Yankees weren't nearly the team they are now, but didn't "Mr. May" bear most of the blame for that?

Both. He's black or white, never gray.

You mean, other than ARod being the best player in the game, top two at worst?

this might merit a separate thread but i think elias sports bureau has officially jumped the shark today (if it didn't jump it a year ago) with this stat on espn.com:

What's your problem with that? We were talking about that stat at our softball game last night. We all thought it was pretty impressive.

Wasn't Winfield considered the best (or one of the best) all-around players in his time -- especially when he signed with the Yankees.

I realize his prime wasn't as great as ARod's is now, but I still think the situations are comparable.

yeah, it means the tigers are good. as jim leyland is quoted in the article, 'it's not impressive, it's weird.'

but the level of detail is ridiculous.

what's the record for scoring four runs in the first for four straight games? how about five runs in the second for six straight games? what about giving up no runs in the first three innings for 10 straight games? how about scoring in the top of the ninth on the road in the west coast time zone on days starting with T or S in second games of three-game series with married puerto rican-born playes with an OPS over .527 batting second or seventh in the lineup?

see what i mean? we get that the tigers produce lots of runs and contrary to what leyland said, i think the feat itself is impressive, but the fact that they need to give us a record for this is unnecessary.

Three straight games with five runs scored in the first inning is worth mentioning. It's never a bad thing to know when it last happened, especially if it was 115 years ago. Your scenarios are ridiculous.

uh, no they aren't. the last one is tongue in cheek. i'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you realized i was being facetious.

but explain the difference between the tigers stats and the others i mentioned: four runs in the first for four straight games? five runs in the second for six straight games? giving up no runs in the first three innings for 10 straight games?

i'm not denying that the tigers score a lot of runs early and it's quite a feat. my point is that eventually they have to stop with the meaningless comparisons. if you break it down you can find something every day of the week that's never happened before.

I know you were doing that on purpose, but that's the great thing about baseball--the stats. And honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing the others you mentioned if those did happen. Each sporting event is a chance to see history, no matter how insignificant. Are those numbers worthy of 15 inches? No. Do those numbers deserve to be mentioned in a 15 inch baseball story? Absolutely.

I guess we'll have to just agree to disagree on this.
