As statistics for demonstrating his value, yes. If he's batting at the top of the order, getting 700 PAs a season and never draws a walk or gets an extra-base hit, then he's a pretty bad offensive player even with those stats. If he has average walking ability and some power, he's very good to great. If he has a lot of both, then he's the greatest of all time.

Much, much more information is needed than batting average and total hits.

Quite frankly,I'm not surprised that someone may have played the "selfish" card on Ichiro. I don't agree with it one iota, but I'm not surprised. Whenever a future Hall of Famer seems to put up a lot of numbers, there's always someone that likes to talk about how the guy is all about the his numbers instead of the team.

BYH brought up Boggs, and I remember at least two guys suggesting that about Tony Gwynn during his career. Of course, those two guys, Jack Clark and Jim Leyritz, are major douchebags in general, but that thinking has been out there in plenty of instances.

Rod Carew was tagged with that label as well.

    Selfish I mean, not douchebag.

I don't know if he's selfish or not, but if getting a ton of hits is what he does best, I don't see what's wrong with it. He's playing to his skill set. I never got that label with Gwynn either.

Tigers absolutely stole one from the Jays today. Down 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Jays walk two and Aubrey Huff launches one to tie it.

They win it in the 10th. Two Tigers on, ground ball to first, throw to second where Scutaro just misses it. Winning run comes around.

Second error of the game for Scutaro, one in the ninth and one in the 10th.

Joe Mauer's 3-3 with a walk and has gunned down two runners at second.

Shame he can't win the MVP.

The walk was the key. I couldn't in good faith vote for him otherwise.
