What is the record for worst June pitching matchup ever? I submit this nomination from my breakout box previewing Tuesday's game.

Toronto (Towers 1-8) at Atlanta (Sosa 1-9)

If I'm Smoltz, I quietly walk to a corner of the clubhouse and slit my wrists.

  3. I might go to that game.

Braves -- last place, 10 games under .500, 14 games out. Anyone still unwilling to declare them dead as far as the division title goes?

  6. I just want to point out that early this season I said that Kevin Youkilis would hit 20 HR this season and would be a 30 HR player in just a couple of years. A few of you laughed and called me names. Youkilis hit his 9th HR last night.

Silly, he's still in single digits. That's not even half way. ;)

Does Ichiro make the HOF? He has a lifetime .332 batting average, has 200+ hits, 100+ runs and 30+ steals every year.

  9. It is easy to forget that Ichiro has only been in the league for 6 years. He would have to double that service to really have a chance. I think Ichiro would have to get up to be about 2,500 career hits to really have a chance. However, that means Ichiro playing until he's 40 years old. Do you think he wants to play that long?

Yes Ichiro has been unbelievable in his six years but I ask you has Ichiro been better as a batter than Smokey Joe Wood was as a pitcher in his short career? Joe Wood's career 2.03 ERA is more impressive than Ichiro's .335 career batting average. Joe Wood is not in the HoF.

Smokey Joe Wood played before most of the Hall electorate was born, Lou. Very few of the ORGINAL Hall electorate of 1936 ever saw him play.
I saw Ichiro a lot. He was a dominant player in Japan and is an All-Star in the majors here. I will vote for him the first time he appears on the ballot, and I don't believe I'll be alone.
         Casty, what say you?

Is Matt Kemp going into the Hall of Fame?

  12. Nomar is a contemporary and I would stack up Nomar's top 5 seasons up against Ichiro's. Will you also vote first ballot for Nomar? What about Todd Helton whose career batting average is better than Ichiro's and whose power numbers make Ichiro look like a little girl? Not taking anything away from Ichiro but I'll say it again - he's only in his 6th season.
