Moddy, I like Hanley Ramirez more than Uggla because of what he does when he gets on base. Zimmerman should still be in the lead, though -- he leads all MLB rookies in RBI, and now he's starting to add some clutch hitting, too.

  2. Speaking of Ramirii --
We just had 10 minutes of Buck-McCarver-Rosenthal whining about Manny R and the All-Star game. The "respect for the fans" card was played, as was the "Back in my day" card and Joe Buck still seems to think people care about his every utterance. McCarver said that Manny Being Manny would "excuse him for just about anything."
Well, yes, except the worst thing these guys can come up with is blowing off the midsummer exo. What network is the game on again?

I remember as a kid LOVING the All-Star game. Wouldn't miss it for anything. Now? It's fading the way of the NBA and NHL games. Entertaining and fun sometimes, but not the same big deal. Bud's dumbass tie helped get me there. This extra player fan balloting did. And the fact that "this time it counts" helped as well. I'm also resigning to the fact that it's now more a popularity contest than a game between the season's best.

i wasn't watching when owens made his debut but the herald had this piece on him. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/14993279.htm

fascinating story although something's missing from the details -- why would anyone draft a .277 division II hitter and ask him to pitch? i guess the move turned out OK but who saw a pitcher in him and why? i like underdog stories like that.

as for lima, his career trajectory is bizarre and inexplicable. years after winning 20 games he had a good year with the dodgers in 2004 (13-4, 4.07 ERA) before sucking last year with KC and being unable to make a major league roster this year. we all know he's a total head case. that's the only posssible explanation.

Don't forget his glove. He's really frickin' good on defense.

I know earlier Lou and some others who know such stuff liked Fielder and then Uggla and Zimmerman. I'm curious if those opinions have changed. I'd put Fielder third - I can live with Uggla ahead of Zimmerman at this point, though my bias has Zimmerman first.

    Good quote in Wojo's latest.

"This year," said a Cubs official, "God couldn't manage this team."

I like Wojo the writer, and I really like Wojo the person, but I can't see how anyone thinks Dusty should be given the rest of the year. As my Dodgers-fanboy roommate told me about a month ago while we watched a Cubs game, "They look like a high school team. They have no fundamentals."

  7. I'd put Uggla ahead of Zimmerman at this point - better HR, runs, BA, OBP, and SLG. But I will say it is very close. It should also be noted that three rookies from the Marlins (Uggla, Ramirez and Jacobs) helps Zimmerman as they split the vote.

Fielder is fading rather fast (he's no Howard).

Dark horse may be another Marlin player - pitcher Josh Johnson - 7-4 2.21 ERA

Is Jacobs a rookie? He was up with the Mets for quite a while last year.

I watched Johnson throw some the other night, he's very good.
Just how many rooks are they playing regularly?

Zimmerman's development at the plate has been fun to watch.  Earlier in the season, he might as well have gone and sat down with two strikes.  His last two game winners have come with two strikes.

Uggla's real damn good, too. They had to double switch him out of that extra innings game the other day and I suspect he might have gotten to that game winner my boy hit.

The darkhorse now leads the NL in ERA...and assuming Francisco Liriano is unhittable again tonight, he'll take over the AL lead.

Has that ever happened? Rookies leading both leagues in ERA?

Lou, look that up so that I may discredit you as an unreliable source. :D

There's really nothing like covering 5 hours of bad Senior Babe Ruth ...

The only good thing was this lefty from Newport, Vermont. He was pretty good.
