BCS leagues expanding - yeah?

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by Moderator1, Apr 19, 2010.

  1. Mark, you are clearly out of your depth. All of the major providers in Maryland already carry the Big zen Network. Just stop posting on the thread for a while.

You wonder why you never made the big leagues?

There is a big difference between the Big Ten Network and the Longhorn Network. I know it is hard to believe Texas could have had the hubris to over play its hand, but it is finding out one school doesn't have enough content to fill a 24-hour channel worth paying for.

Only the diehards feel like they are missing anything by not seeing parts of practice, the volleyball coach's show or whatever it is they fill time with between the one or two football games a year. And renting out time to UT San Antonio isn't forcing cable companies to break either.

Adding the DC metro area (Maryland) and the NYC metro area (Rutgers) also enables the Big Ten to claim about 10 million more (or even more, who knows) TV sets in its market area when it comes time to negotiate its new contracts with ESPN/ABC. Even if very few of those TV sets are watching Maryland/Rutgers football. Such was the logic when the Pac-10 added Utah and Colorado.

Mr. SEC, who I know very little about, has a novel up about the future of conference movement. Pretty interesting, although the usual mountain of salt applies.

He thinks the ACC will get picked apart and that Virginia and Georgia Tech are on the verge of moving to the Big Ten.

Cool LA Times graphic draws lines from conference to conference based on where and when schools jump.

I saw that. That's crazy. The only way that's going to happen is if they go independent.

I generally hate the use of anonymous quotes for matters of opinion as opposed to fact -- an anonymous source confirming a trade before it's announced is OK in my book, an anonymous player calling someone an asshole is not -- but damn if the pullquote in that story isn't damn near spot-on.

That quote is perfect. That Boise continues to live off of one win seven years ago is one of the great mysteries of college athletics.

I do admire them for using people's desire to destroy the BCS to their advantage though. The fanatical desire for there to be a "BCS Buster" over the last few years is the only reason anybody gives a shit about that program outside the Mountain time zone.

Interesting article but the author says that Louisville takes in more in athletic revenue than Kentucky in 11-12. I thought Kentucky had a bigger television contract, a larger basketball arena and a larger stadium. And he says Virginia is close to the top of the ACC in athletic revenue and grosses about 25% more than Virginia Tech, which I have trouble understanding. So I am taking his numbers with the aforementioned grain of salt.

UL may have a better lease deal on the Yum Center than UK does on Rupp. I also wouldn't be surprised of UL is outdrawing UK in football. Can't believe those two things would be enough to offset UK's share of SEC TV & bowl money though.

AQB's love of the Broncos has been about the only constant in the college football landscape in recent years.

And I will add this, as someone living in the opposite end of the state: Even though the University of Idaho is superior to Boise State in almost every other way, the way the media whores after the Broncos football team (and apparently vice-versa) drives Vandal fans and alumni bat-shit crazy.
