The N&O cites the Department of Education and offers a few more details. http://blogs.newsobserver.com/statenow/florida-state-virginia-lead-acc-in-athletic-department-revenue

Virginia doesn't rank all that high in the ACC in either men's basketball or football revenue, which means the money is coming from somewhere else. UVa does pretty well in donations in donations and might generate a little revenue in baseball and lacrosse, though I can't find numbers on those. The athletics department also gets a cut from the concerts and shows at John Paul Jones Arena, which brings in some huge acts.

That was the same grid on my atari games as a kid.

Not so fast on Boise to the Big East, according to Brett McMurphy:

AP reporting same. But I don't understand how the TV deal works? Will only road games be part of the conference package, and home games under a separate deal?

Sounds like the Mountain West wants to fuck San Diego State too.

I never bought that nonsense. It just made no sense whatsoever and even less so without an automatic BCS bowl bid.

As for TV deals, maybe Boise State can look into what's available on the local cable access channels. No one outside of Idaho gives two shits.

Guess here is that the rest of the proposed newcomers --- Houston, Central Florida, Tulane, Memphis, etc. --- probably reconsider and back out as well.

If McMurphy is correct, Boise folded.

But then there's this from Ralph D. Russo's story:

I don't get the MWC holding up SDSU. They have a good (not great) football program and a great basketball program. The MWC is one of the best hoops conferences in the country and loses a lot with SDSU gone. Why freeze them out? What, the MWC doesn't want a big SoCal market in their conference?
Also, SDSU doesn't have to pay an exit fee to the Big East, unlike Boise, which the MWC is reportedly going to help cover. Is Boise's exit fee $5 million or $10 million, I've read both. Just looking for clarification on that one at least.
I guess egos and hurt feelings are standing in the way of letting the Aztecs back in.

SDSU was the first school to bolt the MWC and - at least according to the ESPN story - gave some assistance to Boise when it made its move. Sounds like the MWC is exacting a little payback.

Also, it makes good business sense. If the MWC feels Houston or some other school would make more sense than SDSU the conference should make the move that helps them the most.

Don't be surprised if CUSA does the same thing if some of the schools that left there beg to come back. If I was at Tulane or Memphis I'd be very concerned about the future of my athletic department right now.

Good point on SDSU leaving and the MWC exacting some revenge.
The problem, at least as I see it is, the MWC is no going to get another school that "better fits" the MWC. SDSU has a big market, recruiting base, sells out basketball games in the MWC. Football attendance will be an issue because they play in Jack Murphy, the biggest stadium by far in the conference, but the draw consistent with the other schools.
The business sense tells me SDSU is just as valuable as Houston or some other CUSA program no one on the West cares about. What kind of draw would they to a West Coast (sort of) conference?
If BYU is back in play as well, it should be a no brainer for the MWC to "welcome" back SDSU and solidify the conference. With 12 or 14 schools, I think they would put themselves in a good position to hold on for a few years and let the dust settle.
