The MWC gives BYU a path to a BCS bowl. Otherwise it's pretty much screwed as an independent not named Notre Dame. But if the commish is talking to 3-5 teams, maybe UTEP, a former original WAC member, is in the picture. The MWC makes more sense now for the Miners than CUSA.

So will every other MWC team, according to the story, although Boise will be more attractive than most in the conference and probably get more home games televised.

I think, unless they get an overwhelming offer, UTEP stays in CUSA. A lot of its alumni base are in the DFW and Houston areas, and teams going there every year helps. That and the whole Texas thing.

That made some sense when they were visiting Houston, TCU and SMU. I doubt Rice and North Texas have the same appeal, especially if it means getting back New Mexico and the old gang from the WAC days.

UTEP belongs in the MWC. El Paso is closer to Denver than it is to Dallas or Houston.

It just looks like most of C-USA and the Big East leftovers will merge in some form or fashion.

My understanding is Boise does not get a bigger piece of the pie. The national TV game revenue goes to the conference and the team -- any team in the conference -- hosting gets a bonus. With Boise the obvious choice for national TV at the moment they likely will clean house on such an agreement. I'm sure that was appealing to them.

Thing is, Houston & SDSU are essentially the same school and the Mountain West already has a member in California and doesn't have one in Texas. Given that it's all about "footprint" these days, UH might be the better choice.

I'm sure that new MWC members Fresno State and San Jose State would not be too upset if SDSU wasn't invited back and was forced to stay in the Big East. Would give them a recruiting advantage in head-to-head battles against the Aztecs for the players the Pac-12 and other AQ schools who recruit Cali don't take, or can't get into school.

Yep. I really think SDSU absolutely fucked themselves with that move. It made absolutely no sense for them or Boise to jump to the Big East but Boise had enough cred to force their way back into the MWC, SDSU has nothing to bargain with.

Aztec football's never been much of a draw, except on firework night (it's an awesome show) or they can lure in a BCS school like Southern Cal or Navy. If they do get back in the MWC, it renews rivalries with fellow CSU schools Fresno State and your 2012 Military Bowl champion San Jose State [/fanboi] that date back decades, even before all three were in the PCAA (now Big West). It's really going to impact SDSU men's basketball.

According to an AP story, the MWC is giving SDSU the first option to return as a result of the Boise deal. Guess the Aztecs have an ally in Idaho. SDSU has until Jan. 31.

Presumably without the TV perks ...

Given some of the other destinations in the MWC, I'm guessing San Diego rates as a favorable trip during the fall/winter.
