SMU's cock-block by the Big 12 means North Texas will be stuck in C-USA for the foreseeable future. There is a definite DFW pecking order ever since the SWC broke up — TCU > SMU > UNT. Wouldn't be surprised if TCU was the one who blackballed SMU. And SMU has been blackballing UNT every time the Mean Green looked to jump.

I’m a big fan of blackballing when allowing a newbie into the fold would disproportionately hurt you.

Spoken like a true P5 fan. Two thirds of schools playing football aren't. UAB has fought like hell to be in position to move up when the next round of invitations went out. AAC's TV contract is heavily backloaded and currently pays around a million a year or so - but C-USA sucks sweaty balls, has no TV worth mentioning, is a one bid MBB league, and pays around $200k.

Looked at from there, the AAC does not suck. I'd rather go B12, but that's not going to happen. All we can do is keep building and try to look better the next time it happens.

Most of the P5 sucks too. There are about eight college football teams that really matter, 20 or so deluding themselves into thinking they are relevant and the rest just happy to be in a what is considered a "power" conference. They have no interest (or cash) to truly compete with the big boys.

True that. I know it's a silly treadmill to get on. I just enjoy my team and want better for them. Simple fandom. AAC means more money and TV on ESPN. When you've watched games on Facebook you don't take that for granted.

I understand the reality of who *actually* has a chance in any given year. I believe that the preseason rankings should be thrown out. No rankings until after the second game. Rank teams on what they did on the field, not the school or last year's record or a mythical recruiting championship.

If you want to see how ugly things can get, check out Divided We Stand on BTN
It’s about State exacting revenge on Michigan by voting for Ohio State to play in the 1973 Rose Bowl
Michigan had fought State’s inclusion to the Big Ten for years until the Spartans finally got in during the 50s

If somebody hasn't already written a book about the long-held grudges and behind-the-scenes backstabbing that has occurred over decades of college football rivalries, it'd definitely be a great idea.

Like Jake from State Farm pointed out, the transgressions can fester for years until the "aggrieved" party gets their revenge. Miami still is incensed over the "Gator Flop" from 1971. It's bound to be a topic of conversation in 2024 and 2025 when they play again, even though anybody who played in that game will be at least 70 years old.

Yeah, UAB people need a book to explain long-held grudges, behind-the-scenes backstabbing, and grudges festering for years.

Given the turnover of academic and athletic department staff - do Big Time Donors host a camp every couple of years akin to Jesus Camp where they indoctrinate the newbies with the majesty and glories (and deeply held grudges) of Big Time U?

    1. Thou Shalt Not Refer to Rival with Given Name
    2. There is no other school other than Big Time U.
    3. Thou Shalt Not Covet thy Rival's Uniforms, or Donor Base.....
    4. Keep Thy Game Day Sacred and Wear No other Color but Those of Big Time U....

Whoever is going to do such a book, and they better get on it because a lot of fuckers from these eras of fuckery are dead or dying, needs to look into the rock throwing that led Penn State to leave the eastern schools and join the Big 10. PSU people will swear it was because big meanie Pitt and Syracuse voted them out of the Big East for basketball and because they wouldn’t go along with Paterno’s grand plan for an Eastern conference. People who don’t own cardboard cutouts of dead guys will tell you Paterno’s grand plan called for PSU to get 30 percent of the TV revenue for football while everyone else split the rest….but that basketball revenues be divided equally. His reasoning was his traditional whine and wheeze that PSU has 57,778 sports to support and needed the money.

If this were truly the case, George O’Leary would have been making these statements from a jail cell.

How many schools from one state does a conference need? Houston made the most sense based on location and market size. I don’t think it was any one school saying no to SMU for personal reasons. The Big 12 made a business decision. Given that it has lost Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska, and Mizzou in a decade’s time, it needed to make the best business decision possible. Adding new markets is part of that. And if there was a Texas school to take, it had to be Houston.

FWIW, I saw a report that said Texas was the one hurdle Houston couldn’t clear in the past. Made no mention of TCU, Baylor or Texas Tech refusing to admit another Texas school. It only mentioned the Longhorns.
