Could you sell parking spots in your driveway on game days?

One of my former co-workers in Fort Lauderdale knew EVERYBODY, and every year he got me two tickets to a high-profile Vol game (vs. Alabama or Florida or Georgia or Notre Dame or Miami) for face value --- which was $38/ticket at the time. For a 3:30 game my brother and I would leave his house at 12:30, make a four-mile drive to find a parking space a mile and a half from the stadium, scream our lungs out for 4 hours, leave disappointed (the hobnail boot game in 2001 began a seven-game losing streak for me), walk back to the car, sit motionless in traffic for 45 minutes listening to radio rehash what we had just saw, arriving back home a little after 9 p.m.

Once a year was plenty for me --- even when I saw victories.

I pay about $550 for a pair of seats on the 50 including donation and a parking pass in a deck a block and a half away. Our tailgate is on the top floor of that deck. It takes me maybe fifteen minutes to get there.

Add that not only was the program knifed and brought back but the league and our facilities have literally never been better. It's worth it to me to pay to enjoy that for a few more years.

There are some benefits to not being Enormous State U.

In 2016, we did the 11 hour drive from Harrisburg down to Clemson for the Pitt-Clemson game with the idea Pitt would get crushed. Parked around noon for a 3:30 game and took a shuttle bus from a lot probably a mile or so away from the stadium. When Pitt pulled off the upset we went down on the field to get pictures, then began the walk back to where the shuttle bus had dropped us off, only to find out they'd stopped running already. Hoofed it back to the rental car, which probably took 45 minutes or so only to find.....no one had moved out of the lot. All of the cars were backed up in traffic but it was a standstill. Probably around 9:45 (keep in mind this game ended around 7:30) we started to inch out of the lot.

In my 20s, I wouldn't have cared less about this, especially after a win. I just turned 47 and....yeah, I'm good now. My tailgating crew disintegrated when the Wannstedt-Heywood-Graham-Chryst revolving door happened and people stopped going. The thing I miss about it is the camaraderie. What I don't miss is everthing else.

I miss the $2 pretzels (tasted so much better outdoors, of course). But not much else.

Hot dog with a pack of Gulden's mustard bought from a guy carrying them around in a cooler.

I'm so old, the Florida student section season ticket package was $10, not including the Cocktail Party. And the team went 0-10-1, so we got what we paid for.

Went to The Swamp in '99, paid a student $100 for his ticket just as the band was entering. First rowing front of the UF cheerleaders. Great, great experience

There's more than enough parking around campus and the stadium, plus the surrounding neighborhoods, that I don't think there's a demand for it. Maybe one day.

I’m gonna guess that Florida State has figured out it ain’t going anywhere.
