And an entire nation collectively yawns. Talk about a costly lateral move.

Has UMass been in the MAC before for just football or was it in another conference as a football-only member?

UMass was a football-only MAC member when it moved up to FBS, but it left the league after a few years.

Maybe the MAC will take UConn as a football-only member if Western Kentucky falls through?

UConn either needs to join the MAC or CUSA or drop back to FCS and join the CAA. There's no path forward as an independent in FBS. Villanova and Georgetown both have scholarship FCS programs, and Butler has a non-scholarship program in FCS, so it can be done.

For UMass, this felt like a financial decision as much as anything. Their closest conference game in CUSA would be at Delaware. And you're playing mid-week no matter what G5 league you play in. Not like the Minutemen draw anyway.

UMass and football don't belong in the same sentence. I cannot believe anyone is expending any time or energy on where that team is playing. Find the easiest, cheapest option and forget it. Play local high schools for fuck's sake. Nobody would notice.

Some schools should simply stop playing football altogether. It’s not worth the expense, which cuts into what you can achieve in other sports.

This is super cringy the 5 plus 7 model of the 12 team format is in talks to be transformed to three guaranteed spots each to the SEC and Big 10, two each to the ACC and Big 12 and two to "true at larges" I figured they would leave it to "the committee" to game the system, but I'm guessing the "Big SEC" wants guarantees.
