I have a bone to pick with one or two of these, since they occured before they were Pac-12 members, but, not a bad list.

The Big 12 is like the Holy Roman Empire ... neither one of the three.

Even "The" is debatable since there are so many "Big" conferences out there.

Just call it the Allstate Conference and call it a day. That would be more accurate anyway.

Twenty-one schools. And what do these three add to the conference other than SMU basically playing for free?

    A head-scratcher.

Oh, except that Stanford/SMU donors give the ACC billion-dollar entreé in California and Texas.

    18. They list the new schools on the bottom and the side. Still ridiculous.

And the ACC also has a contractual requirement in their television contract to field a minimum number of teams, The extra schools provide a cushion in case FSU, Clemson and others escape. If the ACC loses the existing contract the league would probably dissolve just as the Pac 12 did. The schools in the bottom half of the ACC would then join Oregon State and Washington State in the league of the abandoned.

I'm certain in a number of athletic departments around the Southeast, that whole skit is a lot closer to the truth than they realize. Arkansas just got their SWC nemesis back, while A&M has to share the state with their bitter rival again. And the original 10 can't be pleased at having to split the pot with two more outsiders.

Guardrails. If/when FSU and Clemson finalize their treason, the additions mean the league will still have the minimum number of members required to keep the ESPN deal in place.
