Beautiful gold, so-so silver and shameful bronze: The running Olympics thread

Trammell was not the best US guy coming into this meet. David Oliver has been running better and more consistently all season.

The first three days for US track have been a complete disaster. No qualifications for the US men in the long, triple or high jump finals. First time that's ever happened. Getting shut out in the women's 100m final. Lagat missing the 1500m final by 2 one-hundredths of a second. And now Trammell, who would have had a good shot to finish with a medal, especially with Xiang out, pulling up with a hamstring injury.

Liukin and Kexin from China tied with 16.725 after their uneven bar routines. It looks, though, that Liukin is second for some reason (a tiebreaker of which I'm not aware). If she does, in fact, finish second, she was robbed. Her routine was better than Kexin, but Kexin got the hometown scoring.

Just like they went ahead with the medal ceremony with the Serbian holding a silver after the 100 butterfly

They just said that Martha Karolyi looked over the tiebreaker and felt it was followed correctly so they will not be filing a protest. Guess they have a different tiebreaker than the one we thought was supposed to be used.

Did I really just watch a Netherlands-Georgia beach volleyball match and the players from Georgia were named Geor and Gia? Or was I just having a really weird dream?

Their actual names are Gomes and Terceiro, so that was a peculiar glitch, or it was done on purpose for some reason.

USA baseball is in good shape today, leading China 8-0 in the seventh.

Enough already about the "hometown" gymnastics scoring.

Who do you think were the beneficiaries of said scoring in 1984 and 1996?

Things finally look up for USA track as they get their first gold in women's discus in 70+ years and a sweep of the men's 400h.

And did I miss U.S.-Germany hoops? I thought it was supposed to be shown at 10 a.m.

The thing I don't get about the tiebreaker is, according to ESPN.com, it came down to which gymnast was closer to perfect on the execution. Now, if that's the case and the chinese girl received a higher execution score, then that means she had a lower degree of difficulty.

All week long we've heard how the new scoring system rewards those who attempt more difficult routines. It seems that is the case except when the result is a tie. In that case, the easier routine is going to win the tiebreaker, which seems a little ridiculous.
