I've keeping track of something similar to that for years - at least back to Atlanta. I count the sports where judging isn't the deciding factor. My list is slightly different than theirs, though. I count equestrian show jumping, but not dressage, where they don't count either, and I do count wrestling and judo, which seem to have a more objective scoring system.

I've got China up 25-24 in gold medals, the US up 69-53 in total medals, and the US up 203-181 using a 5-3-1 scoring system.

Does any of that mean anything? Not particularly, but it is an interesting way to track things without getting annoyed by the questionable judging decisions.

Yeah, but put Georgia, Ukraine and the rest of the ex-USSR republics back with Russia, and they already have 100 medals.

Maybe that's what Putin is trying to do, after all.

Y'all need to read Plaschke's column on wrestling gold medalist Henry Cejudo. It's not at LATimes.com yet but it's on the LATWP wire, and he wrote a BLOG! at LATimes.com about how he stumbled upon/Kevin Baxter suggested the Cejudo story earlier today. Absolutely amazing, both the story and the writing.

yeah, the absolute worst thing i can say about SJ is that she forces a smile a little too often ... and how bad is that?

Good to see an athlete I used to cover (at a paper farther east from Biloxi/Gulfport) when she was a prep trackster and hoops player.
Reese and Gulfport High would visit and play against our area teams.
She's come miles, literally, since those days in the early 2000s.
Great to see her excel like this.
I don't understand why she has to put on the agate page "University, Miss." as her home.
Ole Miss is not her home.
    It's Gulfport.

Mr. Bolt wasn't even running hard in that 200 semifinal.
He was playing with the rest of the field.
Dude's gonna run past everyone in the final.

Whoever is calling the diving is awesome. She breaks down exactly what went wrong, why they got the score they did and what the diver should have done differently. So informative.

It's a nice smile at least.

I don't agree on the diving lady. There have been times when she is directly contradicting what I'm seeing with my own eyes.

I've watched all the diving, and I never felt that way. She knows her stuff, least as far as I can tell.

She informed me earlier that the harder you jump on the end of the board, the higher it will propel you. I did not know that. :)
