Even though I outed myself before taking my current job -- and that's a set of circumstances that limits me, a little, on certain topics -- I still get PMs that wrongly guess who I am.

Even if you use your real name, you're still anonymous if no one cares who you are.

    Thing I don't get...why?

I mean, why in the world is it so important for some people to try to guess who's who? I don't want to know who's who. If I confirmed my suspicions that 90% of those on this board had careers and talents less pathetic than my own, I wouldn't feel worthy to share my opinions or thoughts, much less come on here, period.

As for judging people on this site as people in real life: I don't get that either. Just as the screen is two-dimensional, so are our real personalities as presented here. There are some, clearly, who get off on insulting and antagonizing people, but yet if they displayed even a smidge of that on a regular basis, they'd likely be shown the door at their present shops.

By contrast, I do know some people on here. And a few of them, while quite amicable and friendly as posters, are pretty much filthy in their personal and work lives. By contrast, there are a few jerk-offs who are quite mellow away from the board. Myself, what I put on here is me, but it's a me that's known by my closest friends. There's no need to broadcast ones entire self on here, nor do I think it's possible.

BUT...we're a judgmental species. If I ever came on here and spoke about how I'd love to leave a grumpy in a co-worker's desk drawer (an example only, certainly not the case with me,) I couldn't really blame a hiring SE for saying "I don't know who that guy is, but if I ever find out, he's not working here." Would it matter if I was just joking or blowing off steam? Nope. He shouldn't be expected to take that into account.

This site has simply grown far too much for it to safely remain a dumping ground and grinder for all our respective axes. Much better to find a handful of posters you enjoy and respect and to possibly PM them with your concerns or problems than to bring it to the attention of an ever-speculating world. If you want to tear at your employer, go have a few beers with a friend. If you don't have any friends, then, well, I guess DyePack is getting out more nowadays.

    Good post, Kaylee.

A side note...the guy before me at one newspaper left himself logged in. Fortunately, I'm a good guy and logged him out. Lucky for him I'm not a tool. Even if no one at the paper cared if he posted, that was less than geniused for him to have his browser automatically log him in on his work computer. Duh.

Exactly. If I used my real name, maybe 100 people would know who I was. The same 100 people who already know who I am. So there you go.

Well, for those who really don't know and also have really strong stomachs, here's the link.
FYI, this probably is NOT SAFE FOR WORK. I repeat, NOT SAFE FOR WORK. [/jayfarrar]

A grumpy is a swirl of chocolate ice cream?

    Who would have known?

Amen. This site has some of the greatest people I will ever have the privilege of not knowing.

    Exactly.

And there's an addendum to that.

Although I don't want anyone to think I'm looking poorly upon it, I'd never go to one of the SportsJournalists.com get-togethers. I like knowing the people I know just the way it is right now. I don't need to add a third dimension.
