It's not Fourth of July but I have a similar story with Philadelphia. I took the girl I was actually dating at the time and was just blown away by the movie. I was kind of oblivious to politics at age 17 or 18, she was not super open to that discussion.

She obliged me in me being moved by the message but also let it be known, but not forcefully, that she didn't fall along those lines.

We didn't date much longer after that, not necessarily because of that topic, but it certainly played a role in opening some eyes I'd say.

And Born on the Fourth of July may be a good movie to reexamine in current times.

That’s a bummer. I went through that enough times to never wanted to be “just friends.”

My law school roommate who was a couple of years older than me said “you’ve got to be a bit of a dick.” And though my wife hates that I say that, in my life it was true. I stopped being the total “nice guy.”

You have to be enough of a dick where they won't worry about "breaking you" pr feeling terrible about themselves if and when they dump you.

My buddy said it creates just enough mystery so that they have some uncertainty.

Something they can "fix" without it being a total rebuild.

It's funny how memories like that become forever attached to certain movies. I think I've mentioned somewhere on the site that I always remember the comically-bad date I was on when I saw Pretty Woman. It was clear she wasn't interested very early on, and she was a bit rude about it. It was as if she felt she had to actively annoy me rather than just dropping the "let's be friends" line. Before the previews were done, she had insulted my hometown and told me how much she hated baseball, two things she knew I loved. She turned out to be a bit of a snob. I remember knowing she was into the arts, including opera. For those who don't remember, there is a scene in the movie during which Edward explains how people react to the opera to Vivian. I forget the exact lines, but he basically tells her that people have strong reactions to it. They either love it or hate it. If they love it, they will love it forever. If they hate it, they may learn to appreciate it, but they will never really get it.

I turned to my date and said. "Like baseball."

She didn't say a word, but if you can imagine a metaphorical wall of ice like the one in X-2: X-Men United...

Sadly, being a bit of a dick at that moment didn't change the direction of the date, but it was the highlight of my evening.

Regarding the topic, I'd go with Independence Day, though Captain America: First Avenger is the only one listed in the original post that I actually watched yesterday.

I really like the Fourth scene in The Sandlot. It is how I like to picture the day.
