My tastes were pretty much in line with everyone else's in the 80s (see post on Heart's Bad Animals on whatever thread that was), but the One video is when I jumped on board.

I had heard of them and had heard mysterious snippets of their "speed metal" from my metal-oriented buddies in high school. I had heard all of the stories about how much ass they kicked at Monsters Of Rock. I was intrigued, but it didn't seem accessible, and I would never have explored the genre on my own, at least not then.

But the One video and song blew my mind. Never saw anything like that on MTV, and to this day, when they stop-start the bridge to the machine gun chorus, it blows my mind.

If I had to produce one moment in one song that best exemplifies metal for a neophyte, I'd pick the machine gun chorus from One. For my money, the best moment of the genre.

Fun idea, and I will highlight my picks, but...no country music on the list?

I would also dump Kate Bush, Human League, Tracy Chapman, and Whitesnake to make room for Hall and Oates, Tom Petty, and Phil Collins.

yeah, shit, i guess if you lived in the '80s personal taste really doesn't have a damn thing to do with what you thought was a better album ... christ, really?

London Calling was released in January 1980 in the U.S., does that count?

I liked Hysteria, but it's not even close to being as good as Pyromania or High N Dry for that matter...

As far as Metallica goes, those albums are more popular today than they were when they came out. That's not a knock, that's high praise. Not many albums 25+ years old hold up so well...

  8. Re: Best Album of the '80s - A Tournament

I think Pyromania is soooooo over-rated.
    God, I detest Def Leppard...

Pyromania is a great album. I agree that it's better than Hysteria.

Mr. C, I'll send you my picks some time this weekend.

    REO Speedwagon, "Hi InFidelity" (1980)
Cheap Trick, "One on One" (1982)
    Styx, "Kilroy Was Here" (1983)
    Chicago 17 (1984)

... just like the real NCAA tournament, Illinois teams get the cold shoulder! ;D
