Best burger you've ever had

Spent a couple of days earlier this week in Gettysburg as part of the 150th anniversary of the battle commemoration. I won't say it's the best I ever had, but the Blue and Gray Bar & Grill makes a pretty good burger, actually several of them. Each is named after a Union or Confederate officer involved in the battle.

    (Excellent wings, too).

I've eaten at Five Guys three times now and I just don't think it's that good. They insist on cooking all the flavor out of their meat by having a company policy of all burgers must be well-done. Their fries are good and plentiful, but I don't seek out a place like that for the fries.

First time I ate at Five Guys, I was blown away. Since then, not so much. Good burger, but not as great as I first thought. Must have been the novelty, since it was new here. Hell, there was a time when I enjoyed Sonic as well.

I like Five Guys' burgers less and less each time, too. Love the fries, though.

To me, the gourmet burger and the fast-food burger are different types of food. Five Guys makes the best fast-food burger I've ever had. It blows away its competitors. But fast-food burgers inherently are limited. They are thin, well-done and greasy. They often require good toppings to bring out the best in the burger. (That's right, JackReacher.) You wouldn't really want a fast-food burger done medium rare.

I am definitely checking it out next time. Usually, my stopping point in Gettysburg, which I think has some pretty awesome burgers as well, is directly across Lincoln Square.

Saw that place, but we went to Gettysburg Eddie's the next day instead. It's named for Baseball Hall of Famer Eddie Plank, a lifelong Gettysburg resident. Food was just OK, but had a cool old-timey baseball vibe.

I don't think Five Guys is fast-food. You order and then they cook it. McDonalds and such have X amount of already-cooked burgers ready to go when you order.

McD's is disgusting anymore. The only thing I will eat from there is the Big Mac. Same goes for Burger King and Jack in the Box. Going home from work, I'll either run through a Whataburger or Steak & Shake.

Can't remember the last time I was at a Burger King or Wendy's. Only time I go to McDonald's is about twice a year for a fish sandwich, and that's almost exclusively on a Friday in Lent.

Five Guys started up here in Canuckistan a couple of years ago.

My opinion is if you rank it in the non-fast food sector, it's mediocre.

There are about a dozen non-chain burger restaurants in Toronto that are better on about any level you can think---quality, pricing, staffing, restaurant design and atmosphere.

It's not fast food. But it's a fast food-style burger, in that it consists of thin patties, well-done with a lot of grease.
