Best Christmas special/movie?

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by EStreetJoe, Dec 11, 2006.

  1. I've always been partial to the Sesame Street Christmas special, the one where Oscar flies off the skating rink and down the stairs. Scared the hell out of me when I was a little kid.

    1. Charlie Brown (love the soundtrack. It's just perfect).

    2. Rudolph

    3. Christmas Vacation

    Least favorite:

    1. That Santa Clause one with the Snow Miser or whatever

    2. Frosty -- he's just a piddling dimwit.

    1. Miracle on 34th Street
    2. Rudolph
    3. Magoo's Christmas Carol.

It's A Wonderful Life strikes me as not purely a Christmas story, so I wouldn't rank it here. Great, great movie, though.

One movie that I love, but have't watched years thanks to a broken VCR ... "Scrooged."

    I actually watched that yesterday.

I fondly remember "Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas" from the HBO of my youth.

    1. Miracle on 34th Street; I discovered that movie in college while I was working and everyone was already home for the holidays. What tenderness.

    2. A Christmas Story. "Fragile, its Italian."

    3. A Charlie Brown Christmas. Because its the Peanuts when cartoons were only on Saturday mornings.

How can we not be giving more love to A Christmas Story? It's a timeless classic. Every kid was Ralphie at some point. You can't have that Nintendo because you'll play it all the time, you can't have a bike because it'll get stolen, you can't have a football because I don't want you to play football because you'll get your bones broken (No dad says that ever; just moms); you can't have a dog because you won't feed it and it'll die and then you'll have to bury it in the backyard next to Flipper I, Flipper II and Flipper III, the goldfish you never fed. At some point or another, everyone's been there.

    Anyway, here's my rankings:

    1. A Christmas Story
    2. Christmas Vacation
    3. Charlie Brown Christmas

The NBC list includes Nightmare Before Christmas, which I also love. And if an unaired short that spawned a series counts, the original South Park Christmas where Santa and Jesus throw down rules. I was gonna say it kicks ass, but seemed like saying "Jesus" and "kicks ass" in the same sentence could get me sent to hell. Oh damnit, I did it there. Oh well.
