Checking this list, anyone got a theory on why so many drummers die young?

Maybe its because they're both women, but I always thought that Mo Tucker and Meg White were kind of similar. Very stripped down style (no one was more stripped down than Maureen Tucker), nothing fancy, just steady.

Not questioning your info, Junkie, but it does seem that the HFT solo could be pretty easily accomplished with a double bass. I don't think it's that challenging of a solo if you can keep that riff up...

I always liked Sib Hashian's solo on Foreplay/Long Time. Very repetitive, but quick and challenging.

So are you including Phil Collins or Chester Thompson? I think Chester's better.

    I would agree with that.

It does. The line begins here.

I'm not really sure I understand the debate, save for SoCalDude's excellent point on Krupa, who was way ahead of his day and was a complete musician.

As for the greatest LIVING drummer, there isn't anyone in Peart's class. Period. And I haven't mentioned the fact he writes most -- if not all -- of Rush's lyrics, thus making him more than your garden-variety drummer.

BTW, having seen him in concert last night; he's getting BETTER, if that's possible. Absolutely unreal.

There are a few certainties in life. This is one of them.

Actually the recent VH1 special on the making of ALIVE! proves otherwise. Eddie Kramer, who as you know produced the album, said that the only parts that were actually usable were Peter's live tracks. The rest were vocal fill-ins and bass and guitar overdubs.

Oh my damn, I forgot about Alex Van Halen. Yeah, he is up there in the best drummer category.

  12. Also -- Mick Fleetwood, if only for "Go Your Own Way."
Mick Waller, if only for "Every Picture Tells A Story."
