I wanted to bring this thread up because I realized that the above song, one of the best songs ever recorded, would have been an average tune without the great frontman.

What? No mention of Peter Wolf and the J. Geils Band?

Keith in his Clark Kent glasses. Awesome.

I hang my head in shame for neglecting to mention Peter Wolf. In their heyday he was Top 10, potentially Top 5 in terms of frontmen.

He has a new album out for the first time in ages and it has been getting strong reviews.

Heard Wolf over the weekend on NPR. Interesting interview. If I can find it I'll link it.

    Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters.

I'm a bit biased because they're my favorite band going all the way back to junior high, but I've seen the Foos in concert four times now, and Grohl has put on a show every single time. Two years ago, I saw them on their first big arena headlining tour, and was amazed at Grohl's ability to make the entire building feel like the front row. He has a great ability to engage the crowd.

He's come a long way from being the drummer in Nirvana.

  9. Mick Jagger is No. 1 and everyone else is really in a battle for second. For one thing, unlike Lennon, he's a true frontman. Keith had a song on just about every album, and it was usually good, but there's no question who the front man in that band was. I don't count Springsteen because he's really a solo artist with a backing band. That may be semantics, though, just because of how he was marketed. I would never hesitate to call Dave Matthews a frontman rather than a solo artist. I think I'm just swayed by what the record company called the acts, but so be it.

Personally, one of my favorites is Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes. Remarkable voice, probably the best pure rock 'n' roll vocalist of the 1990's along with Eddie Vedder. And great performer. Really gets into it. Plus, a good amount of band internal strife to keep things interesting if that's your thing.

I also have to say Rod Stewart in the Faces era. I think I'm kind of showing my preferences here because he and Robinson sound so much along, and the Faces and Black Crowes sound so much alike. But "Rod the Mod" could bring it with a capital "B" in the early to mid-1970's.

I think in the modern era that Dave Grohl and Jack White have to be inching their way into the team picture, no?

First off, I second the kudos to 93 Devil for posting that link. Keith's glasses, and the strangeness that was Brian Jones, was cool to see.

And I agree that this thread is all about who is in second place. I'm not the biggest Stones fan, but Mick Jagger is the best rock frontman, hands down. He still can work a crowd, 40-plus years after that video was shot, and look convincing doing it. And he's the perfect singer for his band's music.

    My contenders for No. 2:

    -- Roger Daltrey
    -- Freddie Mercury
-- Robin Zander, from an admitted Cheap Trick fanboi

The whole hairsplitting argument between "band frontman" vs. "solo artist with backup group" is ridiculous.
