Best Frontman (or woman)

  1. Honestly if Roger Daltry was singing down the street without Pete Townsend I wouldn't go see him. Always thought of him as a rock version of an empty suit.

For all of the Canucks who frequent the board, I will throw Burton Cummings out on the list.
I agree with Mick Jagger being the best, but I'd like to throw out Ray Davies of the Kinks as being somewhere in the top 10.

Given that the Stones are more style than substance, I'd have to go with Jagger, too.

Cummings was appearing last Canada Day at a concert in the large park near my house. Didn't have a ticket for the show but walked outside the venue and listened for a while and he still sounded great.

I dunno who the best Canadian rock frontman would be. Probably have to go with Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip but Kim Mitchell - both with Max Webster and on his own - would have to get some consideration. As would Hugh Dillon of the Headstones.

Canuck chick division: Holly Woods of Toronto, Darby Mills of the Headpins and Carole Pope of Rough Trade.

Huge Plant fan, both with Zeppelin and on his own. (Pictures At Eleven is a great album.) To me he is the greatest hard rock singer ever and when he changes it up - like on his album with Alison Krauss or the stuff he did with the Honeydrippers - he's awesome too.

A little credit for the effort?

Not a huge fan of the Honeydrippers stuff, but I've loved his solo stuff.

Plant really has an affinity for early rock and you can hear traces of that in the stuff Zeppelin did. I have a bootleg of him with a Honeydrippers-type band (I don't think Jeff Beck was involved in this) tearing through some great oldies.

A vote for someone I haven't seen mentioned: Peter Garrett of Midnight Oil. Tremendous presence.
