The Prestige was clever and well acted. The wife wanted to see it and with that cast as well as the director from Batman Begins (Nolan), I had high hopes.

Kind of the opposite of X-Men 3 -- I can't pinpoint anything I didn't like, but I didn't really enjoy it that much.

As usual at this time of year, I start to get overwhelmed by the number of good movies coming out and it pisses me off that there was nothing decent to see on those random weekends back in April.

Anyway, I voted for Little Miss Sunshine in the poll. I also liked The Queen, The Prestige, Wordplay and Thank You For Smoking. I saw Little Children today, and it was also very good. Jackie Earle Haley was scary good.

Wait. Did you just laud the acting ability of Kelly Leak? :D

Indeed I did. Entertainment Weekly thinks he has a shot at an Oscar nomination. Interesting article on what he's been up to: http://www.ew.com/ew/report/0,6115,1551413_1_0_,00.html

I forgot about Thank You For Smoking... It would be close between that and Inside Man to crack my top five...

I'm dying to see Little Children, but it was out here for what seemed like a week... How does a movie with a cast like that (Winslet, Connelly, etc...) get absolutely no release despite being lauded by critics and based on a best seller?

Good question. I live in a big city and I went to see it because I was afraid it would be gone if I waited another week. It definitely got lost in the shuffle. Granted I went to see it in the middle of the day on a Friday, but there were only about 6 people in the theater and it was playing on the theater's smallest screen. It was barely bigger than a living room.

I'm usually one of the snobbiest assholes on SJ, so let me play against type here.

Casino Royale belongs on this list. It is truly a fine film.

Many people are going to dismiss it because it's a Bond movie, but they're making a mistake.

Could be the best Bond ever.

Edit: This comes from someone who is picky as hell about the Bond films. Easily the best of my lifetime, think anything post-Diamonds Are Forever.

OK, now I'm really curious to see it. But in the meantime, Borat is the best I've seen.

I have yet to see any of the movies listed.

  11. Michael Haneke's "Cache" wasn't released in Dallas till January of this year. It became my little obsession. I saw it seven times. If you've seen it perhaps you'll understand.

"Thank You For Smoking" is the best proper 2006 release that I've seen. Sorry Borat.

  12. "Smoking" for me. "Inside Man" among the ones on the list.
