If I remember right, the best part about Arthur Bryant's is that there's a framed picture posted by the door of a 34-year-old man. Accompanying the picture is a letter from the guy's wife, explaining that it was this guy's dream to have his picture posted in Bryant's because he ate there every day.

And the reason the wife was writing was because the guy had just died of a heart attack.

There's also a Cabela's on the west side, if you're in to that sort of thing.

If you have a night and a few extra bucks to spare, hit the riverboat casinos. Also, ogle at the homes in Mission Hills.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. Sounds like I'll have to make at least one BBQ stop. I'll be hitting the local fine arts museum as well as the Negro Leagues museum...not to be a museum hound, but I'm deprived of culture out here where the buffalo roamed and now there isn't a fucking thing. Anyone with a favorite aspect of the art museum that shouldn't be missed feel free to chime in, as I may not have time to see the whole thing, if it's massive. If there's anywhere that draws a proper pint of Guinness, that would be most welcome, as well.

Go to Country Club Plaza. There's a proper Irish pub there...

Thanks, Inky. Nothing like fish-n-chips washed down with a few pints. Looks like the kind of place that would have Harp on tap as well, which is good since my sweetie doesn't like "dark beer."

That's a good place to waste a few hours by strolling around window-shopping before dinner and drinks.

Bryant's was decent, but I could have done without the side of flies. The Negro Leagues/Jazz Museum is worth checking out.

Bryant's is indeed awesome, but I now live in North Carolina so I'd gladly take any kind of real BBQ, although I have to admit I had some good Memphis-style down in Charleston the other day.

The Plaza can be a nice place for a walk at night, even if you can't afford anything down there. I've had a good time gambling on the boats without losing too much money. You can play $5 blackjack and nickel slots if you aren't a high roller, but just want to play for a while. Westport is a good bar scene. In the summer I would definitely take in a Royals game (insert jokes here) and/or go to Worlds of Fun, but I'm not all that up on what to do this time of year.

  10. Kansas City is a very cool town. I can't add too much more from what's been listed here, except to second it.

If you like steaks, try the Golden Ox, Hereford House or Jess and Jim's.

I would avoid going to Kansas City, Kansas, however. Nothing there, unless you like crime a lot. But the Johnson County suburbs on the Kansas side (Overland Park, Olathe, etc.) are splendid, unless you like to drink, perhaps.

Do they still have those bizarre liquor-by-the-drink laws in Kansas?

Isn't there a new WWI museum in KC?

Bryant's is too filthy, you say? That ain't filth, brother. That's character. The place smells like hickory smoke because they've been smoking meat for years.
