Home PC Version: MVP 2005. They are still modding it today and it's great. I haven't played it in forever, but the game play is still good.

I can only play NBA Jam (TE by the way; there's a major difference between the first two if you can think back that far) with my best friend. For hours over the last 13 years, we'd sit as a team and play the computer and develop our chemistry. We'd use the power-up icons and the hot spots and torch teams; we once scored 325 points on the Mavericks, including a 104-point fourth quarter -- both records (we keep a record book with the Super Nintendo games). Now if another friend and I play, everything is wrong. Webarely beat the teams because the chemistry isn't there. My passes go to the back corner; he shoots way too soon or not soon enough; shot clock violations run wild; he doesn't know how to hit the offense (you know, play defense). It sucks.

But NBA Jam is one of my must-plays when my best friend and I meet. I'll have to go to Minnesota for his wedding sometime in the next year, and for the bachelor party, I think we're going to get a couple strippers, a shit-load of beer and have everyone play NBA Jam, Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball and Family Feud while getting plowed and seeing naked ladies dance. It'll be awesome.

Sports: Super Tecmo Bowl, end of argument. Bases loaded, double-dribble RBI baseball

nonsports- Mortal Combat, Duck Hunt Excitebike Super Mario

  5. Based on this thread, we are going to have to declare Tecmo as the official video game of SportsJournalists.com, aren't we?

    Minor threadjack...

If any of you play FIFA 08, College Hoops 2K8 or Tiger 08 on Xbox 360 live ... send me a PM.

I can't categorize the best video games of all time, but my favorites, for sentimental reasons, are the original Super Mario Bros. (great childhood Christmas) and NFL Blitz and Goldeneye on the the N64 (great times with buddies at home and on the road in hotels while playing AAU baseball). And this won't be a popular pick, I'm sure, but I think the FIFA franchise has long been superior to Madden.

Gotta disagree on Mortal Kombat. Other than the visceral thrill of ripping someone's spine or heart out, that game hasn't held up well. The control scheme sucked (too many buttons to do the most basic things) and the graphics now look dated. Even MK II, the best of the series, had the same control issues. Try to pick it up and play now, it's next to impossible. Other than Sub-Zero's fatality, I couldn't do more than punch and kick without a good share of blind luck.
Street Fighter II, on the other hand, had timeless graphics (still look great going on 20 years later), easy controls (quarter-circle + punch = half the moves in the game), great characters and was fun as hell. All around, a much better game.

Mortal Kombat was an important game, sure. But SF II was light years better over the long haul.

Sports: Tecmo Bowl - no competition
Non-sports: Goldeneye, and MarioKart 64. Man I love thosed games.

Double Dribble was a hell of a video game.

    I'd agree with that.

  11. Tecmo Super Bowl gets my vote as the best of all time. It was much better than the original Tecmo Bowl, which is pretty popular on this thread.

Metal Gear Solid on PS2 comes in second.

Indeed, I was just going to give a shout out to FIFA 95 for the Genesis. Great game.
