    IMHO,

Tecmo Super Bowl (NES) and NCAA 2004 (PS2) are the best football games.
Coach K (Genesis) is the best basketball game.
MLB 07 The Show (PS3) is the best baseball game ... until 08 comes out in a few weeks.
NHL 94 (Genesis) is the best hockey game.

I have to vote for Zelda: Ocarina too, but I also have a soft spot for the Final Fantasy series.

Knowing your love of baseball Buck, you would have LOVED High Heat baseball, especially the 2003 version.

The gameplay is easily the most realistic of any baseball game I've played, and I played 'em all before and since. You had, like, 50 stadiums on it (including many of the classic stadia like Ebbets Field, Polo Grounds, etc.), with its modding community creating more. It was very easy to mod, an editor was made that made putting historical teams in very easy. Most uniforms from the expansion era on were/are available to download. You can customize seasons, rosters, etc.

I still play HH2k3. Generally, you can put my collective math knowledge in the head of a midget's cock, but I had/have all manner of algorithims and formulas to make HH2k3 accurate down to the letter.

Awesome, awesome game. In fact, I need to finish up my 1970 season where instead of divisions I made it one, 24-team league, a la, the EPL in soccer.

If modding after the fact is any consideration, I'll have to go with this:

FS9, the 2004 edition of Flight Simulator.

I ran a search on FlightSim.com last night and found files for the Airbus A380 for nine different airlines; only Singapore Airlines has a 380 in service. Moreover, Boeing's new 787 is available in 15 airlines; its initial rollout was during the summertime, no deliveries yet.

I'd say Flight Simulator deserves some mention, if only for the intense communities it's created (see vatsim.net to get an idea). The virtual airline I'm with is one of the biggest and has better than 1,000 active pilots. [/dorkiness]

    Great post. Thanks.

Two questions: Can you still buy that game, and can you play it on a PC?

Because if so, I'm hitting up eBay for it ASAP. And then I want to know how to modify it like you got.

It's a PC game (inferior versions were made for PS2, etc.). I'm certain you could find it on eBay. Probably for a song, like a $1 or $2. It's even possible you could find it at a mall store, but that's less likely.

Do that and I'll get you the links to baseball heaven. Hell, I'll even send you my 1970 roster if you want it. Be aware, the graphics weren't that great even by the standards of when it was released, but the gameplay is so good it really makes the graphics moot.

  10. With that sidesaddle, of course you'd name Final Fantasy.
Those are great games, but how would you even pick one to be the best?
I think I had the most fun with 9, but 10 had an amazing storyline and graphics.
Is it 7 so many people are nuts about? I never played that one.

I think I had High Heat 2001. I know I played it during my freshman year of college, which was 2001. I really liked it, but I never finished a season. Fucking classes and Tetris and GTA 3.

FF7 was pretty good, though part of the wonder for me was it being the first game I played on a Playstation after years as a Nintendo loyalist. Good stuff throughout and Aeris' death scene is fresh in my memory to this day, but I still put it behind FF6. The fact that it was so memorable, even with the limitations of graphics and music on the SNES, says a lot.
