didn't the Times recently consolidate with the Star Ledger?

Yes.. last year late spring/early summer The Times merged most of its business (book keeping) and copy desk operations with the Ledger in addition to all pagination and printing operations. To attain the target number of people in the newsroom nearly all the part-timers were laid off with buyouts and all of the full-time staff was offered buyouts as well.

It peaked around 76,000 and lost 8,000-10,000 immediately with the price hike. I wouldn't take much pride in "only" losing about as many readers as the Times of Trenton, however.

Sunday circ. was 48,000 10 years ago.

Let's face it, the Trentonian has lost readers because its news section is a shade of its former tabloid self and, unless you have a kid going to one of the local high schools, the sports section is dominated by local stuff. JRC has reduced the news and sports staff to the bare bones, so how could it hope to still put out the product it did even 5 years ago?

  6. Those circulation numbers do not sound current. Circulation for weekday editions of The Trentonian were in the middle 30,000s at this time period last year and it is doubtful it has risen. Circulation for Sunday editions of The Trenton were barely in the low 30,000s.

A state audit several years back proved The Trentonian had been lying about circulation by tens of thousands so even some of those circulation numbers from several years ago are not accurate.

The Trentonian also claims to have over 100,000 daily readers.
That's how it markets itself, not in terms of subscribers or circulation numbers, but in terms of readers -- I guess the marketing gurus they hired told them they can claim 3 people read every copy of the paper sold, even if its just to check out the page 6 girl or skim the sports pages.

I gave the most current figures available, 9/06. You can see for yourself on the ABC site. I don't know where you get your figures, but ABC is what most people go by:

Really, the truth is bad enough. Why try to make it seem worse?

The Newspaper Association of America is encouraging newspapers to do this, but most papers are skeptical that advertisers will buy it. The Philly papers have been stressing the Philly Daily News' "pass-along readership" as well. There is nothing especially shady about this, but it doesn't appear advertisers are interested in these numbers.
