However since both papers serve all of Mercer County, not just the city, if you wanted to skew the numbers you could look at the county population of 350,000 people in 13 municipalities (226 square miles) and then say that area wouldn't be served by a daily paper.

Well damn, if you think you know who I am, let's go out and pound down a few brewskis sometime!

Reasons To Not Work For JRC

Reason No. 7: A sports section copy editor at The Trentonian was suspended this week for 2 days without pay after a headline mistake. Translation: The newspaper hired a new sports section writer--on a trial basis--and the suspension will help pay the salary for his first week of employment. This is the first newspaper job for this new sports section writer so he must not have known to read our sportsjournalists.com thread before agreeing to work for JRC.

Hey Bedwetter, you're a little behind the times ... TWO sports copy editors were suspended this week, for 2 days each, without pay.

Bedwetter and SinkingShip, since you guys seem to be in the know about all things Trentonian, what have you heard about the news sports editor there?

Trenton is the capital. Yes, Jersey is a weird state in that the two main markets in the state aren't actually in the state, but I really doubt you'll see a state capital like Trenton lose a paper anytime soon.

Reasons To Not Work For JRC

Reason No. 8: I am sorry for yesterday's post which listed only the suspension of one sports section copy editor at The Trentonian. Sinking Ship was right and two sports section copy editors at The Trentonian were each suspended for two days without pay this week for the type of simple mistakes that appear in all newspapers everyday, especially The Trentonian. Translation: The trial basis for the new sports section reporter has just been extended to two weeks.

    -----BONUS REASONS-----

These are up to date....The Trentonian has fired its obituary clerks and is now forcing its 2 or 3 person news/features copy editing staff to type up the night's obituaries while also acting as copy editors and page designers....The second suspension this week happened on a night when the sports section copy editing staff was already without 1 of the 4 scheduled copy editors/page designers because that person was serving a suspension....All sports reporters have been ordered back to the office after covering any event so they can write their article(s), serve as agate clerks (since that position was eliminated), and serve as copy editors to proof completed page-proofs.

The "suspension without pay" is a neat way to cut the salary for a budgeted position without actually eliminating the position.

The "trial hires" will last until the day we decide to send them out the door.
