What did you expect him to say? We're Number two and we love it? Of course he has high expectations. I wish him well. However, being the captain of a sinking ship isn't the best position to be in.

... and I bet that once you spend time locked up at Guantanamo, the county jail ain't so bad, either.

The problem is once (if) you get out, you're nothing but older, completely out of touch and have repeatedly taken it from behind. ... The similarity with working for JRC is indeed alarming.

There's a problem with your theory: 90 percent of kids who "survive" some of the s__tholes that are JRC papers don't have that killer instinct. Now, is it good that they're weeded out early by tough times? Not for me to decide. But no one's only experience in the business should be one from which they run, screaming and ass-beaten.

I don't have to prove my Jelenic-hating credentials to anyone. But the fact remains that a lot of tremendous journalists emerged from various JRC cesspools over the past 15 years or so; many of them are on this board.

All of your experiences help; when you go to another shitty newspaper chain, you'll appreciate that it's less shitty than the JRC hell you came from.

That isn't a feather in Bob's cap by any means; he just happened to have bought a lot of newspapers that once paid decent salaries. Most of these places are paying less than they were 15 years ago!

Still, if you interviewed a 22-year-old who admitted he/she couldn't hack it at your old shop, where you endured the same conditions for years, you're not going to be very impressed.

Believe it or not, The Trentonian used to be - let me stress USED TO BE - a pretty fun place to work. Funny-as-hell characters, old-school news guys, intelligent, talented journalists, wacky and compelling news coverage. But that was before JRC sapped the life out anyone there who ever gave a damn and actually showed the slightest f-ing sense. At the same time, management's underhanded and sleazy tactics managed to weed out most of the good employees or discourage others from coming. And it's suffered greatly for it. There are several quality, skilled people still left who have somehow survived all the crap, fighting the good fight. Whatever the circumstances or reasons why they remain, they should be commended. Godspeed, my friends. Godspeed.
