most shops would rather hire an SE first and then allow him or her to hire their own ASE, in part, giving the SE one less reason to bitch.

Working at any JRC paper is not a good career opportunity for ANYONE.

Prospective employers consider working at a JRC paper about the same as working at Dogsex Weekly in terms of legitimate journalism experience.

It's the fast track to career suicide.

Someone just pointed this out to me:

    haha

It's awesome that at $160,000 per year, Bill Murray acts as his own secretary. That's gritty.

Bullshit. Do you want me to list all of the former Trentonian staffers who have succeeded in the industry? And yes the pipeline has nearly dried up but as someone brought to our attention, a Pulitzer winner did a stint at the Trentonian very recently.

As I said, this is the perfect opportunity to use a paper's inherent shittiness in your favor. If someone actually improved the section it would be considered a minor miracle, at least by the people who have read this thread or read "Tabloid From Hell."

I've been around long enough to know that not all of the best talent is at larger papers. It's not where you've been, it's where you're going that counts. If you pay your dues, eventually, you'll get to where you want to be with help from God.

I work in Saratoga at the Saratogian, and I saw in the AJR article that they actually talked to my managing editor... That's pretty funny. Overall, We don't have too many problems with JRC. They mostly leave the little guys alone (we dont make a hell of a lot), but we have been able to make the product better than it was.

This is a link to an article that Aaron and another reporter wrote last night about a girls' basketball game. There is a blatant error in the section titled "The jacket stays." Aaron or the other reporter got the name of the Trenton girls' basketball coach wrong. The coach's name is Reggie Murray but Aaron or the other reporter called him "Reggie Lawrence" twice and then they start calling him Murray.

Aaron also wrote a nicely detailed column and a solid sidebar that look clean and well thought out. As I wrote in a previous post, Aaron's already proven he's a capable journalist.

Wouldn't the newspaper have been better served, though, to have the sports editor in the office editing others' articles to prevent just such a mistake as the one above, especially when the company is still seeking an ASE? Was Aaron looking to become a columnist or an SE?

Getting the coach's name wrong was a no-no. Hopefully he will learn from it.
I think Aaron might be trying too hard and that's when simple mistakes occur.

George has been covering Murray for years. He would never make that mistake.

Bottom line is that the mistake was made. hopefully they will learn from it and improve.
