Being at the JRC paper in Saratoga Springs, with the world-class horse racing just a couple blocks away, that's kinda sick. lol

  3. Hopefully, Lee, you'll reinstate me in time for MNF, because I want to take part in the "WITH" volume debate.

If the cat keeps using that line, on average, twice a month, figure we got a dozen more times before Jaws makes his debut. The borrowing from your own writing is not among the worst acts I have seen or heard about, but I agree that it is lazy. It certainly sets a lazy example for his writers.

Ear, I've got a game to watch but I just had to post this. Aaron is a kid. He's got a lot to learn both from a writing, editing and management standpoint. He will learn and he will improve. I'm not impressed with him as a columnist. In truth, he sucks but that's not to say he can't improve.
I take into account that he is a kid. If you've got some years under your belt, you'll see where I am coming from.
As for laziness, there is no excuse for that. He knows better. Hopefully, he will learn.

  6. JRC won't help him improve, unfortunately. They pluck a "kid," as you categorize him, from a sea of copy editors. Suddenly, JRC and this "kid" both think that despite no ASE or SE experience, he'll become a decent SE. Maybe he will become decent, maybe he won't, but company history points to this cat being out of JRC long before he's even inched closer to being a decent SE. It's hard to see his columns really improving any time too soon. I actually think he's a capable reporter but I must agree with your assessment of him as a columnist. Now, he's an SE without an ASE, so who will be the one massaging his columns and offering him the loads of advice he needs, in terms of columns? Answer, no one. He's on his own, and he's proven he needs help.

JRC put him in a terrible position and AB put himself in a terrible position. I'd normally classify the position JRC put him in as unfair, except that he also put himself in that position, so he's got to take equal blame. Being a first time SE at a place like that has to be a big enough task on its own. Trying to figure out how not to suck at being a columnist at the same time is too much. I'd suggest he should completely chill on the writing and try to deal with the SE aspect.

And with that last post, I believe this thread has come to its end. Please lock it and be done with all of the finger-pointing and ridiculing. We get the point.

  8. Okay everyone, HeinekenMan says this thread has come to its end, so I guess this is over.

Aaron is a true pro who understands the business. He may indeed be young, but he's got a good handle on things.
If things don't work out at the Trentonian, he'll land on his feet. How much did he really risk? He's got a wife, but I don't believe he has any kids. He'll find another job if he has to.
He did a good job on the copy desk at the Courier-Post, and could surely land another editing job somewhere if things do not work out. The CP is very shortstaffed now on the desk. The sports editor there may even be willing to take him back, if it came down to that.
The bottom line is he had the balls to try it. If it doesn't work out, so be it. How many of you have stayed at jobs far too long (and just complained) and never taken one risk?
I don't understand the Aaron bashing on this thread. He's actually a nice guy who has a real interest in putting out the best product possible. Half of you wouldn't know him if you saw him out at an assignment.
It's one thing to bash a publication, but to personally bash a guy who is one month in at his new gig, before really giving him a chance to see what he can do, is a bit ridiculous.
I didn't think this was what this site was supposed to be about.
    It's disappointing.
I think it's also very discouraging for any young writers reading this thread. Is this what we do?

  11. Thank you trueballer. I really didn't want this thread to end, and you've done an admirable job of extending its life. For that, I thank you. I think you probably are a phony who is really just trying to stir up more Aaron bickering, but that's fine.

  12. To get back on "topic," here's a reminder of the current ASE post:
