Waylon--Forget about the young women for a minute. If a bunch of guys were in a bar and the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers walked in, how many of those guys would rather hang out with their investment banker buddies, if they could party with a star?

  3. But the guys aren't necessarily in any sort of danger. That seems to make the two situations apples and oranges.

The girls don't think they're in danger either, until they're in it.

They're used to partying with college assholes, not pro athletes assholes, which is a whole different breed of psycho. They still think they can say NO, to people who have no ability to hear NO.

But you questioned why these girls would hang with obnoxious celebs when there are so many 'nice' people out there. Most people in this celeb-driven culture would do they same, female or male.

    Investment bankers are obnoxious also.

  6. Credited. But I'm just trying to think of other objectively "successful" young men.

21 - She wouldn't think she's in danger when a guy was exposing himself to her at a bar? I guess that can happen, but it doesn't seem reasonable.

Waylon, I think what 21 wrote is true... and I also think there's another thing at play when it comes to young women ages, say... 16-25.

Society and you men place a huge emphasis on looks and sexuality for young women in that age range. And those young women feel that power. But they're too young and inexperienced to know what to do with it.

There is a huge conflict going on inside young women between the natural feeling of wanting to be pretty and sexy and enjoying the attention that comes with that... and looking/acting like a 'slut' and/or getting carried away with it by getting into a dangerous situation.

You have no idea how complex it is to navigate this conflict.

I'd have much less sympathy for the woman if she were 35 years old and understood the whole thing a little better. But in your early 20s, you're still figuring it out, making mistakes, doing trial-and-error... and no matter how much mama tells you acting that way is no good... the temptation is to think: "Mama's just saying that because her time has passed. I'm going to enjoy this while I have it."

    Every generation has to learn.

*Sigh* this is tough to explain in an internet post when entire books have been written on it.

  8. I get all that. I do.

I just don't understand precisely why the biggest moron in the bar is the one she is flattered by just because he throws a football for a living. That's the part I don't get.

  9. To me, this would be like choosing, say, Amy Winehouse over dozens of other pretty, normal girls in the same bar.

Why do the Pittsburgh Steelers have all those fans?

    Or any team?

Why is the NFL so popular?

    Or any sport?

All they're doing is throwing a football for a living.

    Why does this website exist?

Why have some of us devoted our careers to opining about people who throw a ball for a living?

    What's the fascination?

The part in this that women never admit is that they want to have sex too. It's not just the guys.
