Bigger story: Appy State or Boston no-hitter?

    Buck,

I have the utmost respect for you, but I think you're completely off base with this comment. Boise State had to deal with the dismissive nature of the so-called elite schools even though it was nationally ranked. They were playing at a neutral site.

Appy State plays in Division 1-AA (I refuse to call it that lame ass name unless I absolutely am forced to) and was AT MICHIGAN. The home field is usually worth roughly three or four points.

What the Boise State win has in its favor is that it came in a bowl game while Appy State's was the first game of the regular season. What Appy State has in its favor was that it was expected to be Cupcake U. This time, the cupcake ate the fat kid.

The only reason this thread is existing (and ESPN's play) is because it involved the freakin' Red Sox. Period.

If the same situation occurred and Clay Bucholz threw a no-hitter for the Angels (also a first-place team with a near-similar record as the Red Sox) against the Rangers (also a fourth-place team with a slightly better record than the Orioles, nevermind the 30-3 beatdown last month), it would be treated like it should be:

Way, way, WAY behind the Appalachian State game.

Bigger story, but not the greatest upset ever. Not even close. Hell, had Arkansas State beaten Texas, by a look at the computer rankings that was a far greater upset story for the day than Michigan-App State. But overall, Arkansas-Citadel in 1992 featured a similar gap in computer ratings. App. State is ranked higher than more than half of Division I.

  7. Actually, if there is a bigger story than App. State it's this: The disappearing wall between Davids and Goliaths. Add up Boise State, App. State and a near miss by Arkansas-whatever against Texas and you realize maybe App. State isn't as big a story as we all thiink it is.

We're seeing a pattern that shows these teams are a lot closer in talent than ever before. Who's going to write that column?

When are we going to see the sudden call for the abolishment of Division I-AA (or, heaven forbid, a spot in the BCS for the I-AA champion?)

I'm already sick of college football; bring on the NFL!

To the contrary, I was thinking what a nice weekend it was without the NFL.

    We'll also accept Lou-ah-vuhl.

    Lou-E-Ville is still taboo, however.
