Shotglass - coming from a white man that is a blatantly racist comment.
We are not suppose to render an opinion on this type of thing unless we disagree with Whitlock.

It appears there is indeed fruit to ESPN getting rid of Whitlock. Because if his editors allow him a forum to at least attempt to tackle issues like this, in this way, then (Sportsbruh notwithstanding) it can lead to some fascinating discussion.

People might disagree with some of the points made (and the way they were made; thought th "gay" stuff was more than heavy-handed, but that's to be expected after the Black KKK comment, which is way over the top. Also, the Reagan mention was gratuitous and out of left field), but there's definitely nothing wrong with putting out an opinion on racial issues other than quarterback position changes and the number of minority coaches. Those have become "safe" issues to write about.

Say this for Whitlock, he is not playing it safe this time. Though I must mention I'm not sure how popular AOL sports is, and it would not surprise me if Whitlock's mandate is to bring in more readers. Through controversial tackling of controversial topics.

Why would you put the correction on the same page as the error? People don't give a shit that a wrongie was on C-4. They look at the box on A-2 every day.

Great points about legalizing drugs and prison culture.

Someone pointed out the high out of wedlock births in the black community. Well if you are a teenager with no prospects and the government will give you cash, free food, medical care and subsidized housing for birthing illegitimate kids, that seems to be an easy route to take. Poverty programs perpetuate poverty, they don't prevent it. Mexicans risk their lives to come here with no expectation of help at all, why should we provide aide to irresponsible persons? The children of farmworkers usually don't end up being farmworkers. Let's end all welfare in this county, aside for maybe a minimum wage government pick up the trash program for those who are otherwise unemployable.

The solutions posed in that article sound rushed and quickly put together.

My main issue with these self appointed "denial busters" posing as journalists are the use of their grandiose finger pointing as if they're providing a public service.

How many times are we going to hear the same old song and dance by people who relish calling folks out? There was a criticizefest on our issues back in 95' called the Million Man March. What did we leave with? A "he's telling the truth" flag and pin?

Are the Whitlocks of the world telling me something new?

It's the "he's right" congregation that love to sashay up and down the aisles of the church comforted at the pastors sermon admonishing the sinners while saying little about preventing the sin.

That requires too much attention and effort. They'd rather announce they're providing a public service by pointing out easy to digest visual aids on the Las Vegas strip for their easy to digest solutions. All we have to do is look back at Nancy Reagan and "Just say no" or "stop doing that". Better yet, turning off the music and changing our names is an even better solution, and we should thank these guys for pointing that out. Or how about asking David Stern to move the All Star game to Europe. That's REALLY going to help our situation here.

    Incredible.

As a true journalist providing a public service, you're expected to do thorough investigative research. An African American speaking on behalf of our issues deeply held to them would take the time staking research to look deeper.

Who do these guys site as their sources?

You have journalists in here siting BET dotcommers to strengthen there points (that was said by me on another site months ago where some thought discussions DEEP as these may not take place). And we have other journalists who give look and see visuals on who is acting up while admittedly stating they didn't site any statistics to back their POV (no porno!!!)

This is LAZY SURFACE LEVEL JOURNALISM. There are enough Bill O'Reilly's in the world, now everyone want to follow his lazy template.

Stop thinking you're telling folks anything new wanting to get patted on the back for not being "those types". And if you're going to take the responsibility to speak on our behalf, go beyond the easy to digest solutions.

I'm set to acquire my Masters in Journalism and I'm constantly disturbed by the lack of the integrity in the industry where writers are largely into it for their own self aggrandizement rather than the public good.

Welcome big pee - fetch me a beer then pull up a chair and lets talk. What kind of investigative work did you expect Whitlock to do. He wrote a colum about what he observed while walking around Vegas. Since others including Rick Rielly today on ESPN supported story I have no reason to doubt its accuracy .

It's one thing to discount the significance of the situation.

Totally another to do it in one forum, when just having written the type of piece Whitlock did for AOL.
