There seem to be two points -- not necessarily at odds -- up against each other in this thread.

I. Pointing the finger at cultural pathology rather than examining factors that contribute to and prompt negative behavior is, at best, shortsighted. America has never truly treated lower class black problems as "we" problems but as "Them" problems, and that has created a horrific breeding ground for social ills, criminality, and general delinquency. Whitlock using the all star game, of all things, and a launching pad for such a discussion is a little weird. The fact that he seems not to care about the people he discusses as much as their ruining of the event can be construed as offensive and callous.

II. Maybe it is a "we" problem, but the simple fact is that America believes it's pathological, and is not about to invest itself in helping lower class blacks. There is a class of blacks that exists -- woefully undereducated, uncultured, lacking vision and practical goals, cut out of mainstream life and caught up in either a reactionary culture or an extreme and dangerous version of the mainstream culture -- in such a precarious, horrible, powder keg state that something needs to be done. And you can ask the Native Americans if America is going to reach back in time and apply some corrective measure to their situation. Ain't happening. So, beyond the sociological and ideological, we need some practical tough love. It ain't fair to have to "self-police," but let's get real, we have to. And its a daunting task, but we can't choose to remain silent or to condone and even defend some of the behavior Whitlock mentioned. Whitlock isn't the issue. Vegas isn't the issue. But there is a real issue here, and it's too important to overlook because you don't like the fat fvck who wrote the column.

Personally, I lean more toward the first position. I grew up in one of the worst environments in this country, and I can't stand it when people b1tch and moan about people who mainstream society left for dead. These people are always going to exist without fundamental changes to how we do things in this country. And most of them ain't gonna turn out to be polite citizens.

That said, it's not just the poor who grew up in extreme environments anymore. The low expectations, the images blacks take on as authentic (and there's plenty of blame to go around, but sh1t, it's killing blacks, so it's more crucial for blacks to address this sh1t in a country where other humans by and large are not worried (to put it mildly) about black self-love)... it's affecting blacks of every level now. I see it in my old neighborhood. I see it in my younger relatives. I saw it in college among the middle class blacks. The sh1t is scary. Not scary as in, damn, what if this dude swings on me. Scary as in, damn dude, are you serious? Is this what it has come to?

I can't see how we'll make any progress apologizing for the sins of our peers. We need tough love. But it has to come across as tough love. Not spite and disdain. And then we need others in this country to stop rationalizing the sins of their peers and fathers. But, as they say, my spirit and hope is optimistic, but my knowledge is pessimistic.

Obviously I did not see because it was buried in all posts proclaiming Whitlock to be Uncle Tom and threads by Jiggy Higgy discussing bustin a nut in a ho or speculating whether she cleaned herself.

I do have to disagree with the tone though. I think America has viewed the problem as a "we' problem for at least as long as the Johnson Administration. I also think that as a country America is willing to help those who help themselves. Out of wedlock birthrates of 70% are not helping your image very much.

why not "our" in that second sentence? see what i mean? its always "they" or "them". we get it from other communities. we get from those that are portended to be a spokesperson for "help from within" (whitlock). and thats fine. those of us who care will help lead "our" people. but dont try to push this "america is willing to help those who help themselves" shit on anyone. because the unfortunate fact is, there are quite a few america's located between canada and mexico. and your life experience will determine which one you live in....

If you're American first, then it most certainly is a "we" thing because it affects everyone. And not everyone falls into one side of this fight or another. There are those of us who would like to find a way to make life good and equal for everyone, but there's work that has to be done by both sides.

Black neighborhoods rarely if ever come about by their own choice. It's the choice of those in white flight that choose to leave and act as if we don't exist until a Whitlock type rant does his admonishing.

If Katrina couldn't open the flood gates for you to see that there are Americans that have remained out of sight from our public concern for years, I don't know what will.
