They weren't really hockey fans, just people looking for an excuse to get drunk indoors.
So maybe that played a part, or that arena's practice of hiring elderly people to handle security.
Even the drunkest redneck won't get into a brawl with a 70-year-old grandma.
For one, they have canes, and for the other, you go to toe-to-toe with an old person and it's very likely a dozen dudes will come charging down the stands to whip your ass for even thinking about it.
But Fenian, that's how we roll in the dirty South, respecting your elders.

I always ask people when they say or write this: What the hell are you talking about? If they can help themselves, what's the point in helping them?

I believe the term should be ". . . America is willing to help those who try to help themselves. "

I have no problem with the government sending unemployment checks to someone who was laid off but who is out every day LOOKING for work.

I do have a problem with the government sending unemployment checks to someone who has basically decided he will wait until the checks run out before he begins to look for work.

Likewise, if someone stuck in a dead-end job wants to go back to school to better themselves, I believe the government should provide a low-interest loan for this education.

Just because you are willing to help yourself doesn't mean you don't need a little help to cross that bridge.

I am going to chime in real quick.
I am from New Orleans.
Let me do Jason's and Tracy's homework on the city.

*Crime occurs everywhere. Last I checked, the city of Houston has some issues with crime. Kansas City is no Utopia.
*The events in Las Vegas had nothing to do with the relation between Hip-Hop and the NBA. The biggest issue involved an NFL player.
*The 400 or so arrests in Las Vegas are standard for any large scale event. Mardi Gras in New Orleans, which is bigger than ANY All-Star game? And since you want to relate the All-Star game, hip hop and black people; Mardi Gras is largely white (tourists) and have at least two and half times the size of this year's All-Star game. Mardi Gras in New Orleans had its usual crime statistics. This year's Mardi Gras attendance totals was near pre-Katrina levels.
*Tracy. You need to look back during Hurricane Katrina. Last I checked there were a lot of Louisiana people living in Houston. I hope you saw their faces. A lot of them want to go home. The All-Star game will play a small role in the recovery. If you don't think it will be safe, stay home. But remember to check yourself at the door for overreacting like Jason has done with safety and New Orleans.

*The columns by Jason were irresponsible and raised the blood pressure levels of people unnecessarily. In fact I don't know why people are listening to Jason. He does not know his real stance on the 2007 All Star game.

His column in the KC Star said he and his friends had a good time and had few incidents. Days later in the AOL column he basically said it was like war torn Iraq. So which is it?

The bottom line......New Orleans will be fine. All of this hot air could cost New Orleans a shot at a much needed economic boost.... Oh Jason, did you know, the Essence Festival (http://www.essence.com/essence/emf/) is coming back to New Orleans after it failed in Houston (T-Mac). Oh by the way, you know the Bayou Classic returned after it failed in Houston (T-Mac) to the city as well.

And a bonus entry: The Jazz Fest is back too. Do you know the crowds that attend this function and do you know the location of this event is? In the middle of the hood!

Oh that's right you are the authority on where Hip Hop (and gangsta rappers like 50 Cent is not hip hop... Hip Hop is Common, Lauren Hill, Mos Def for starters....know the difference) and black people congregate.

Alma you're right- as BT suggested "try" would be a much better word.

You have hit upon something though - the reason why you cannot have a solid discussion about race. Everyone is to afraid they will be embarrised. Politicians view it as the 3rd rail. Look at Joe Biden. His campaign for President died about 10 minutes in. Does anyone really think Joe Biden is racist?

Interesting theory about the retirees as "security," Jay. I always thought it had to do with their willingness to work for minimum wage. But I can see how anybody attacking grandmama would get beaten down by 10 angry Southerners.

As for Bonnaroo, there are no brawls there because everybody is stoned and they don't want to harsh anybody's mellow.

Is it Decoration Day already?

Fenian, do you know what Decoration Day means?
'Cause some have confusion and enjoy some lyrics

Decoration Day
Drive-by Truckers

It’s Decoration Day.
And I’ve a mind to roll a stone on his grave.
But what would he say.
“Keeping me down, boy, won’t keep me away”.

It’s Decoration Day.
And I knew the Hill Boys would put us away,
but my Daddy wasn’t afraid.
He said “We’ll fight till the last Lawson’s last living day”

I never knew how it all got started
a problem with Holland before we were born
and I don’t know the name of that boy we tied down
and beat till he just couldn’t walk anymore.
But I know the caliber in Daddy’s chest
and I know what Holland Hill drives.
The state let him go, but I guess it was best
cause nobody needs all us Lawsons alive.

Daddy said one of the boys had come by
the Lumber Man’s favorite son.
He said, “Beat him real good but don’t dare let him die
and if you see Holland Hill run.
Now I said, “they ain’t give us trouble no more
that we ain’t brought down on ourselves”
But a chain on my back and my ear to the floor
and I’ll send all the Hill Boys to hell.

It’s Decoration Day
and I’ve got a family in Mobile Bay
and they’ve never seen my Daddy’s grave.
But that don’t bother me, it ain’t marked anyway.
Cause I got dead brothers in Lauderdale south
and I got dead brothers in east Tennessee.
My Daddy got shot right in front of his house
he had no one to fall on but me.

It’s Decoration Day
and I’ve got a mind to go spit on his grave.
If I was a Hill, I’d have put him away
and I’d fight till the last Lawson’s last living day.
I’d fight till the last Lawson’s last living day.
I’d fight till the last Lawson’s last living day.

It's about a feud between the Hills and Lawsons. Decoration Day is Memorial Day in the old dirty South.

HIs comments were condesending. He spoke from an ignorant POV regarding race. I don't think black folks particularly care and the media makes it bigger than what it is.
