Bill Simmons smites Scoop about the head...

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by jason_whitlock, Feb 25, 2007.

  1. You're missing the point. Simmons doesn't write about those things. He writes about '80s pop culture and Boston sports.

Scoop sees himself as the "next" Ralph Wiley, yet puts out starfucker columns that would have made Wiley cringe. He's done nothing with his massive platform except waste it on inanity and poorly written puff pieces. Simmons can't say that, of course, so he did the next best thing -- tell Scoop to put up or shut up.

Scoop could see himself as the next Ralph Wiley writing on something totally different and Ralph wouldn't be brought up. So now Ralph Wiley is himself being used as a "black card" to shut Scoop up.

    Garbage.

If Simmons isn't one to write on those things, he's not in the position to tell another writer the things he should be writing on when he himself could be doing so.

Is Simmons inaccurate in pointing out that Scoop said he was going to try to tackle some of the same issues that Wiley did? If I understand what he wrote correctly, Scoop himself created the comparison and Simmons is saying that Scoop just isn't living up to it.

  4. Let me see if I'm understanding you.

If someone doesn't write about XX, he/she has no business telling others how to do it?

I know a lot of editors and media critics who would disagree with you.

EDIT: Outofplace hit it on the head.

Simmons is out of place to bring up Ralph Wiley. He has no bearing to that particular article, and bringing up previous unrelated comments by Scoop regarding Ralph has zero bearing to the article you guys consider horrible.

Notice that Wiley is now being used as the "card" here to criticize Scoop, not the overall article direction and tone of Scoop's piece.

This is just plain sad. He threw out the Wiley bone and now you're all chewing on it.

    ^^^^^^
    FIXED

  7. You're the one who's choosing to focus on that, not us. Simmons points out several additional errors in Scoop's column. The Wiley portion was at the very end.

  8. If that's how you feel, then read Simmons' All-Star column from last Monday. He addresses the scary scene in Vegas.

I'm talking about his article TODAY.
Then present those issues. Simmons digging up Wiley from the grave to disbarage Scoop was a cheap shot on the level of posting on an internet messageboard. It had zero place in his piece. The same way he threw out what Scoop should be concerned about while harboring no concern for those issues at all.

To tell me "he doesn't write about those things" is nonsense when there isn't some fixed paradigm journalists are pegged into, feel me? I feel that its a slap in the face to acknowledge obvious double standards to tell others to take care of.

That's the sign of a meek and inconsiderate person, much like rebuttal, to a rebuttal Simmons wrote, meek, inconsiderate, and weak.

Re: Please quit posting in this thread! Thank you.

In the past, Simmons has minced words when talking about other ESPN staffers. Perhaps this got through since it was a BLOG!

Somebody alert TheBigLead to start tracking this to find out if Simmons gets popped by TWWL for slamming a fellow ESPNer.

Maybe this is a sign that Simmons really is leaving Page 2 for Hollywood.
