continue the research, Boom. it smacks of "look at them over there". which is what ive been saying the whole time. so since youve identified the problem over at sohh, what do you plan on doing about it. other than copy/pasting over here for others to laugh and ridicule? i mean since youre lurking, why not post? thats why we did over here. coward. youve exposed yourself for what you are. thanx.....

mavick - The post I've put up are just a few of many that supports Whitlock's column.

You said it yourself that site has a lot of kids. Do you want your kids reading and posting on there? ( Daddy why does that man talk about beating up a ho?)

Instead of having a problem with me putting up a few examples of the fine work at Sohh, you should really have a problem with the trash that is posted.

I am asking you a serious question -- you are obviously an educated man-- do you really think its appropriate for posters on SOHH to toss around the "N" word so freely?

no. you havent posted anything that supports whitlock's comments. as i said, its the internet. people can be, say or pretend to be anything that they want. lets be real......how many "thugs", "gangstas" and "gangbangas" are going to spend an inordinate amount of time on a messageboard. is that "keepin it real"? if youre going to stereotype, then do it right. to let some tell it, theyre out on the corner in the "hood". or too busy doing "drive-bys". nope. most of these posters are kids in school, with free time. or normal everyday folk at their cubicles. hardly, the negative stereotype that you wanna portray.

i dont condone alot of what is said on those boards......the misogyny, the racism (and it goes both ways there, trust me) and most of all, the immaturity. but i dont turn my back on it either. the main reason that i use "DrRick" as a screen name is not to prop myself up. if anything, i would have used it here to garner some faux respect. i use it there almost as a symbol. so they can see that you can love hip hop and still be successful in the "system". and of course, this is from the younger kids. you would be amazed at the amount of private messages that i have gotten from kids talking about college and trying to get advice. last week i was asked about credit scores. some of them i keep in constant contact with via IMs. and i'm sure that che gets the same. but you and the whitlock's of the world would rather we turn in disgust and leave it to fester. who does that help?

one of the biggest problems in the black community is the refusal to turn back and give a hand. its the "i made my own way and i'm never going back" attitude. and it fosters this vicious cycle of "our" kids having to look to rap, sports and hip hop for role models. people tend to be like what they see most in their environment. so if we continue to turn our backs, then the problem will continue to grow. so no, im not going to stop going there because of some of the things that i dont like. and im not going to stop going to the worst elementary schools in town to mentor because the kids "wont get it". and im not going to stop presenting myself, my office and my profession to the "east side" because its not the right demo for a successful practice. because if i can change someone's perspective on life by just being around then i have done a ton more good than by argueing on a message board. but i can find time to do that, too ;)

mr - at the risk of sounding trite I sincerly applaud your willingness and effort to try and show those kids a positive role model. It's what all kids need more of. If there is posts that you find offensive on sohh why not call the posters out and tell them what is wrong with their posts?

I think you answered me indirectly but are you offended when posters toss around the "N" word? I was raised in enviroment that taught me that it was a word of hate. I must admit when I hear or read of someone using it I am shocked.

because you dont always have to call someone out. if i do that, then ill more than likely be met with resistance. i learned from john demartini that no 2 people have the same value system. and thats ok. but when you put your values above someone else's then you are care-"less". and again, its the internet. do you think that you guys blasting sportsbruh at every turn has changed him at all?

as far as the "N" word. its something that blacks and whites will never agree on. do i like it? nope. do i use it, at times. yep. do i understand why its used and the history as to why blacks have adopted it? resoundingly yes. its an oppositional identity. you (not you in particular) give it a negative meaning, to degrade me........i take it, turn it around, use it as a term of endearment and i have taken all of the negative power away from it. same thing with "man". you call us "boy", we call each other "man". again, i think its time to move away from it. although, it is funny to watch others complain that they cant use it when referring to blacks :) but its not as simple as a "No N-word" borough. its deeply rooted in a culture that pre-dates hip hop by a long time....

Maybe the combination of your passive approach and Whitlock's scorched earth plan is not all that bad. Your approaches are different but it does not seem like you guys ae as far apart as it might seem.

I've read all those explanations of oppositional identity and understand it but it still sounds awful when you see or hear the word. I think you lose more than you gain by its use. It might have been Richard Pryor who started the trend to use it as term of endearment.

Rick, how many times have we gone on sohh and spoken on the idiocy of some of the members there?

some of you guys are doing the very thing we often fight against as black men. I'm disqualified to speak because I carry the burden of idiots who happen to look like me, and in this case, post on the same messageboard as me.

    Incredible.

You obviously haven't read James Baldwin. It's use has been prevalent in our community for years. Our generation didn't invent its abuse.

i disagree. i would think that che and i form a more symbiotic pair. with him being more "in your face" and i being more "subtle". the reason being, that we are gaining nothing in our diatribes on this board and in life, other than doing the work necessary for change and understanding. we're working for the same goal. and if it turns out that we are malcolm and martin......thats fine. (and lord knows, i would never compare myself or he, to those legendary civil rights leaders. unlike some that write columns for aol. perhaps good cop/bad cop. or whatever you feel comfortable with.) as long as the word is heard. whitlock, and he is free to correct me (rather than sit on the sidelines and change the title at his whim), is nothing more than a self-serving blowhard. thats how i see it from here.....

you see, when he said "i doubt mavrick is a doctor".....that said all that needs to be said. i was judged because 1)i disagreed with him and 2)i floated over here from a hip hop message board. how is that any different from the racists that judge me because of my skin color and the way i choose to dress? exactly.......
