Personally, I'd rather trust a bunch of reviews on Yelp as opposed to a food critic. It really sucks that he lost his job, and I don't wish that on anyone, but I never read the newspaper food critic when I want to know what's good to eat in a particular city.

I'm starting to see the names in New Orleans, and it's not quite what I expected.

A lot of hard news folks are being shown the door. Because, you know, hard news doesn't get Web hits.

I know some of you are not in the business, don't know any of the people involved, or both. Out of respect for those still learning their fate, or still in shock by the news, can we at least wait until after the funeral before we start chatting openly about what a wonderful rent-controlled apartment just opened up, or how this is smart for business when it comes to certain beats?

Yes, there is a decided business angle to every cut, and each is worth discussing, but geez. The blood is still flowing. There will be a time to discuss who the T-P can do without, and who it can't.

Sorry, but some of these people are my friends who took their beats very seriously. There will be plenty of time in the coming days to post about how dispensable they were.

Still. My point stands. I figure food critics are like movie critics. I'll rarely, if ever, agree with any of them.

I still see plenty of bad reviews on Yelp. Perhaps when I start to notice a change, I'll re-think things. Doubtful, though.

Reports from Huntsville indicate half of the newsroom is gone, including the small college sports reporter, interim/former sports editor and the longtime preps editor whose late father was a beloved institution at the paper.

An award-winning sports staff of probably a dozen or so about 10 years ago currently has one columnist.

Heartbreaking day for Alabama and New Orleans.

Peter Finney? If a member of the Newhouse family ever shows up in New Orleans, they should be tarred and feathered. Same goes for the other towns.

Today is the worst day in Alabama newspaper history. Black Tuesday.

I'm surprised something really bad hasn't happened in a newsroom in the last five years of doing this.

How can one expect the copy on the web to increase when there is but one person to write? Who will cover sporting events? Anyone?
