With the news of design and editing going to Birmingham, I presume my friends in Mobile are gone. One of whom drastically changed my college paper for the better. Without him and his vision in design it was crap. He deserved better. Everyone of these people deserve better.

I realize the guy won a James Beard.

And, I'd rather eat at Lugar's than Golden Corral.

So, will the restaurant reviews in New Orleans be as good? I don't know. Maybe he'll review restaurants for someone else. Maybe someone even better will fill the void.

I think the current Sun-Times freelancer is much better than Pat Bruno, who was there forever.

Either way, you'll still be able to find plenty of info and reviews on restaurants in New Orleans. (And, it still sucks for him, his readers, and the paper, that it had to come to this.)

I'm not shocked. I'm hurt. These people were mentors and extremely helpful to me as a young writer. (Unlike some idiots here)

If you based what you know about me on slappy's post, you'll be glad to know he has no idea wtf he's talking about.

Before this little menage a trois of pissery evolves into a side road distraction, please don't go there today. Just don't. Any of you.

This is a shitty enough thread as it is without adding a pissin' contest. Please.

Because the janitor was making more than some of the copy editors.

    Question about the numbers here:

Does the NOLA group include the Alabama papers as well? Or are they referring to non-editorial employees (circulation, production, advertising, etc.)?

It's roughly 600 employees total between the four papers, 200 in New Orleans alone.

I know most of us understand this, but I'll say it again.....

THIS HAS NEVER BEEN ABOUT QUALITY OF WORK.

It may be economics, it may be restructuring, it may be age/seniority, but it is NOT about people doing a poor job. That is something I had to remind myself every day after getting laid off. It's inaccurate and naive to think that because someone works hard, performs well, that they are not going to get the axe. Just not the way this stuff works.
