I remember when Newhouse was considered one of the "good" companies to work for.

Looks like they just took the lead in the race to the bottom.

My thoughts to those in Alabama and New Orleans who had to go through this.

You could have said the same thing about Tribune Company until a few years ago.

Final numbers from the Huntsville "bureau":

32 of 45 positions eliminated in the newsroom today (that's a staggering 71%, folks). Entire Business department and all but one from Sports got whacked.

Supposedly 7 positions will be filled. We'll see.

FUUUUCK. That paper basically ceases to exist.

Absolutely pathetic. I hope people in Huntsville and beyond realize what's being lost and throw a fit. Advertisers can't be happy about this either.

The most educated city in the deep South, home to literally thousands of rocket scientists, just saw its newspaper become a neighborhood insert for Birmingham, which itself is bleeding out. Insane.

There have been many dark days in journalism in the last five years. This is one of the worst I can remember. Maybe the worst.

What's going on in Alabama is stunning. It's too soon for all this.

    And that's the plan, basically.

It just might be the worst, though it should be remembered that many have had their "worst" day before today.

I'm reminded of the quote by one of the French soldiers in Kubrick's Paths Of Glory as they're about to take one of the unfairly condemned French prisoners to meet his end by firing squad. He tells the sergeant he doesn't want to die.

"Many of us will be joining you before the war is over."

There are too many "worst" days. One of the Gannett purges got rid of almost 1,000 people. The day the RMN closed was a horrible one as well.

There's too many worst days to list...

Mizzou: I was just thinking about whether today was the "worst."

I am so fucking depressed right now.

So, was Mobile hit? Most of the layoffs I've heard about have been in Huntsville and Birmingham.
