You mean educated, white-collar technical-science progress attracting companies from around the world combined with good universities and plenty of natural resources for recreation and industry?

I'm mostly OK with Alabama's bad rep. It keeps the number of outsiders moving in manageable.

At one shop, we practically begged them to ditch the Monday edition. Very little local content in either news or sports and it was just one more day someone had to work the desk. It was usually me and I managed to turn it into a five-hour shift or work on some advance stuff while the office was quiet.

Anniston, at one time, had one page devoted to mug shots of the most-wanted persons in the county. There were ads sold around it. Included on two other pages was public record stuff, like divorces and marriages and deaths and incorporations and other courthouse stuff. And then they ran a weekly arrest report from around the county. The other 20 pages were normal.

Never heard of any racial stuff. The folks weren't too happy about the divorces though.

Got a text that Huntsville announced the hiring of a new "Community Hub Director" late this afternoon - in an email that went out to all employees.

I'm sure that was music to the ears of the 30-plus newsroom employees who are losing their jobs in a couple of months. Just when I think Newhouse can't screw this up any worse, they prove me wrong.

Ironically, they hired Anthony Cook, the managing editor in Anniston.

Huntsville, known worldwide for technology, military defense and space development, is a "community hub?"

Would not surprise me one tiny bit if Birmingham City Council pushed to switch notices to the local African-American newspaper. At this point, would be hard to blame them.

I was thinking the atl-weekly would make a push at them. Langford already tried to switch them once upon a time.

Is the Speakin' Out News still publishing in Huntsville?

Obviously you've never read The Birmingham Times. They have always run such notices.
